Entrance of the Shogun - David Marlatt

In ancient Japan, the shogun were the military commanders appointed by the emperor. Grand and regal, when a shogun appeared to the public, there was a sense of awe and power at this warrior leader. Flanked by armies of samurai warriors, their power was obvious and their respect was demanded. This clever piece for very young band uses only the 5 notes used in a pentatonic scale (like playing just the black keys on the piano). This gives this beginning band piece a true Asian sonority. Encircled - Jonathan Dagenais

"Encircled" puts recurring rhythmic passages in the foreground, reminding us of traditional military music. These passages are always enveloped in more modern sonorities and harmonies in order to combine tradition and modernity. Right from the first notes, we can hear the melodic/rhythmic motif which will serve as the main musical material throughout the whole work. With cadenzas, flowing lyrical writing, and powerful rhythmic drive, this is an exciting and dramatic work.

    Archangel - David Marlatt

The title came from both the adventurous feeling of the music and from St. Michael, a popular saint found in many religious denominations. In Catholic teachings he has several roles including leading the army of God to triumph over the powers of Satan and was respected and honored by military orders of knights. This piece by David Marlatt is set in three main sections: The Thunder of Battle * Memories in the Wind * In Sight of Home. (4:05)

The Loyal Legion March - John Philip Sousa / arr. Loras John Schissel

Enjoyable and very playable, this stellar march is yet another example of Sousa's complete mastery of the style. "The Loyal Legion" was written to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, an organization composed primarily of American Civil War officers and their descendants. The anniversary celebration was held in Philadelphia on April 15 and 16, 1890, and the U.S. Marine Band was ordered by the Secretary of the Navy to participate. The march was originally an entr'acte to the Sousa opera "The Queen of Hearts," composed in 1885. The work is now available in a superb edition by Sousa scholar Loras John Schissel, which is exclusively endorsed by John Philip Sousa IV.

Walnut Grove Suite - Stephen Chatman

This suite opens with Fraser River Fanfare which reflects the treacherous western Canadian river. In the second movement, entitled A Swallow in the Valley, the folk song She's Like the Swallow is the source. Fort Langley March rounds out this work. This is written in the tradition of early twentieth century military band marches. It contains some unusual harmonic twists which only enhances interest.

Fiat Lux (March) - Howard Cable

In 1951, during the war in Korea, Canada's National Defense Department produced a radio series titled "Voice of the Army". The Howard Cable Concert Band was the main stay of this patriotic/public relations program. Half the musical content was military, the balance 50's pop. Thirty nine programes required two marches per show. I composed eight and at the war's end the music went to storage. Some years later I re-constructed several of these forgotten scores; one of which is Fiat Lux - Dedicated to the University of Lethbridge.

    Alla Marcia - Bruce Yurko

Beginning with a stately drum roll-off, Alla marcia may seem like an ordinary march. It doesn't take long after the trumpets announce the military style melody to see that the work is 'like a march' in its sound and texture. However, an occasional three-two bar adds sparkle and interest whenever it arrives. Alla marcia can be programmed wherever you might use a more conventional march, but want something a little 'left of center.'
