Dances & Sonnets - Jacob de Haan
Dances & Sonnets is a piece by Jacob de Haan, inspired by the dance and poetry of the 19th Century Europe. Lively instrumental dances alternate with spoken sonnets that are recited by one or more readers, accompanied by quiet, solemn music to provide contrast. De Haan has compiled a list of suggested poems to be read, but other poems may be selected that better fit the occasion. Dances & Sonnets is a dramatic and truly special piece!

Atlas Symphony - Thierry Deleruyelle
The Atlas Symphony for symphonic wind band is an impressive and subtle work, thematically complex, with a rich orchestration, but also great beauty. The composer was keen to draw a parallel between an atlas, where all the geographical maps of the world are collected in one book, and his score, which brings together all the facets of his musical style. Despite being written without any breaks, the symphony is structured around three main ideas. It is based upon a series of notes that will become the very essence of the piece, its building blocks. Like the works of composers of serial music, the series appears in different forms - melodic and harmonic, thematic or simply asan accompaniment. With its wealth of rhythms and contrapuntal power, this piece is a compelling concerto for orchestra. The Orchestre de la Police Nationale was the first to be attracted to this work and premiered it with excellence under the baton of composer Thierry Deleruyelle.

BandQuest, an exciting series of new music and accompanying curricula for band, is a program published by the American Composers Forum. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. The heart of this program is new works written by a diverse group of leading American composers who have created challenging pieces that are a true departure from standard middle school repertoire. Every BandQuest project includes a residency component in which the composer works collaboratively with a middle school as they create their new piece. Many BandQuest pieces are accompanied by an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to assist students as they learn the music and to integrate each piece with non-music studies. Adagio Sostenuto - Vincent Persichetti
From Persichetti's many offerings for band, the Adagio Sostenuto movement of his Symphony is a particular favorite for festivals and contests. The second movement of this popular work is one of the most beautiful pieces in the wind band reportoire. This movement is offered as a stand alone publication, so that bands that are not technically ready for the entire piece can still perform this lyrical "gem." Without question, the second movement is technically easier but musically challenging. The piece is well worth the effort.

Hymn to the Sun - Satoshi Yagisawa
Commissioned by Tokai City Wind Music Band for their 40th anniversary celebration. The y gave the composer a difficult theme, that is: For 40 years we did our activity as if we were a family. We had new experiences, welcoming new members, supporting and help ing one another, sometimes having troubles. Through these experiences, the band became our Sun. With the piece, we would like to express our enthusiusm of progress, taking over the early members' will. The composer used to join in a school band, so he stron gly agreed with the theme, but composing is another hard thing to do. He decided to dr op on the band almost everytime he went to Nagoya, and promoted friendship with them, which led him copose this piece.

Rhapsody for Flugelhorn - André Waignein
As a trumpet player Andr Waignein has composed many pieces for this instrument; extremely electrifying pieces meant for young trumpet-players, and more demanding works for professionals. With his rhapsody Andr Waignein wanted to compose a piece in which spontaneity dominates and in which the virtuosity, sonority and style of the soloist is featured to its maximum. Although the piece is not one of the most difficult, it nevertheless places high musical demands on the soloist. Following an impressive orchestral opening the soloist comes to the fore, with long phrases followed by more dynamic and rhythmic passages. The second movement gives evidence of extreme sensitivity andoffers the soloist the opportunity to prove that the trumpet (flugel horn) can be a stirring and emotional instrument. The third movement is the most spectacular. The orchestra actively participates with increasingly delicate interventions. The soloist can display all the possibilities offered to him by his instrument. With a long sostenuto on the trumpet (flugel horn) the beautiful rhapsody ends.

The chorus is reproduced here to offer an insight into the song's meaning:Your slightest movement I will feel and understand.Share my yoke, and come the way that I must go,In our togetherness my peace you'll know. The world beholding us will see it's so.Calling for real sensitivity both from soloist and accompanying group, this is an extremely rewarding piece to play - and a moving listening experience for the audience. The arranger, Ivor Bosanko, who lives in California following retirement from the post of Territorial Music Director in The Salvation Army's USA Western Territory, is himself a respected songwriter, composer and arranger. He has produced this wonderfully sensitive and evocative arrangement of the song for cornet soloist and band. Already widely used and recorded in its original brass band form, this arrangement for concert band will undoubtedly be a useful and valuable addition to repertoire.
