Quintero (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hodges, Steve
This exciting new piece from Steve Hodges begins with a chorale-type introduction that leads to a dynamic opening statement by the low brass. The main theme is legato to contrast with the busy percussion section. A secondary theme, introduced by the woodwinds, is followed by the return of the introduction with development. The second theme is then repeated by the woodwinds in a light, jazzy style. This leads to a powerful conclusion where the percussion section drives the full ensemble to a rousing finish. Totally Tropical! (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Barry, Darrol
Totally Tropical! is in bright Caribbean mood and will benefit from good, rhythmic playing. Flutes, oboes, clarinets and trumpets all have to play the little chromatic figure that starts the main tune and this may need slow practice to become fluent. Additional percussion instruments may be added to give a 'Calypso' sound.Titles in the Prelude Series are specifically scored for bands with few, if any, bass instruments but will sound well on larger ensembles. The bass line is playable by any combination of bass clarinet, bassoon, baritone saxophone, trombone, euphonium or tuba; in the event that none of these is available, the part for trombone/euphonium (B flat TC) can be played by tenor saxophone. The tuned percussion part is entirely optional and can be played by any available instrument(s). Each piece also includes a preliminary exercise. This is always in the same key as the accompanying piece and consists of a scale and chord progression that can be used for improving ensemble, balance, intonation and instrumental facility by changing tempo, articulation and dynamics.Duration: 1:45

Chorale and Mystic Chant - Timothy Loest
A beautiful hymn with rich harmonies and suspensions opens this fine work for beginning bands. As the lyrical melody reaches a final cadence, the piece then moves into a bombastic chant with a wealth of percussion. The theme is presented in different textures and students will explore the basic components of a fugue in an easy setting. Listeners and performers alike will be excited by the rhythmic drive of the percussion. In addition, consider using the opening as a daily chorale to work on intonation with your ensemble.

Twelve Seconds to the Moon - Robert W. Smith
is a celebration of man's conquest of the sky and the heavens above. While the Wright Brothers' first manned flight lasted a mere twelve seconds, astronauts were soon walking the surface of the moon. Robert W. Smith's spectacular sonic adventure stretches the envelope with some of the most exotic and adventurous scoring for percussion and winds ever achieved. Searing and blistering musical lines merge with explosive percussion to make this one of the most sensational works for wind ensemble or concert band in concert band literature today. (12:06)

Fenix Blue - Peter Meechan
Fenix Blue is a solo work for alto saxophone and wind ensemble, commissioned by and written for British saxophonist, Tim Watson.A wild blues inspired opening for unaccompanied saxophone gives way for a slow, dirty blues! More blues elements appear in the following slow funk section, driven by the percussion section and drum kit.Slow reflective music follows before a return to the slow funk - this time with plenty of the original blues music interjected around the band and from the soloist, leading to a loud conclusion! The title makes reference to the large blues influence in the piece, but the Fenix referred to in the title is a dedication to the Phoenix 2 capsule that rescued the 33 Chilean minors who were trapped underground for 69 days last year, the last of whom was brought to the surface in the capsule as I was finishing this piece.

The Holly and the Ivy
This setting of the beautiful holiday classic is accessible for very young bands. Its memorable melody, notated in a comfortable range, is passed around the sections of ensemble as the other parts play accompaniments that are interesting, yet not difficult. Written in bridge form, the piece begins softly, with soft sleigh bells and clarinets below the break, adding flutes, then brass, then building to a minor section and a very short percussion feature, making it a great opportunity introduce students to this form!

Fanfare for Hope - A. Eric Heukeshoven
Fanfare for Hope was commissioned in honor of the inauguration of Father James P. Burns, the 14th President of Saint Mary's University of Minnesota. The fanfare is based on the hymn tune Melita, more commonly known as the Navy Hymn, Eternal Father, Strong to Save, with the text "My hope is built on nothing less ..." serving as the inspiration for the piece. The opening brass fanfare features the uplifting first notes of the tune transitioning into a legato treatment for the woodwinds and horns. The theme builds as the brass and percussion eventually return leading back to the original fanfare. The music ends triumphantly with the entire ensemble joining in celebration.
