March from Scipio (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Handel, George Frideric - Sparke, Philip
Handel's opera Scipio was written in 1725 and performed the following year in the King's Theatre, London. Following Handel's death his operas fell into obscurity until the 1960s when they experienced a major revival. This famous march from Scipio has however remained popular since its first performance and has been the Regimental Slow March of the British Grenadier Guards since the 18th century. The march is fairly simple and gives young bands the opportunity to play a well-known baroque melody which should be well within their technical ability.Duration: 2:15

Meditation (Saxophone Section Feature with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hassler, Hans Leo - Sparke, Philip
This timeless melody by Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612) is now chiefly remembered because of its inclusion in J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion (hence its title), where it is treated to a variety of rich harmonisations. This setting features alto and tenor saxophones, who first play a lyrical descant to the famous hymn tune and then the melody itself, against a Bach-like obbligato in the upper woodwinds. This fabulous new arrangement presents a wonderful opportunity to feature your saxophones.Duration: 4:15

Mexican Holiday (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
Whilst making no claims to be stylistically authentic, this little piece aims to capture the infectious spirit of mariachi, a word whose origins are lost in the mists of time, but which describes not only the performers (on guitars, vihuelas, violins, trumpets and harp) but also the music itself. Their music speaks of love, passion, politics, life in the country and revolutionary heroes but is unerringly uplifting in style and immediately recognisable as the spirit of Mexico. A chance to add that Spanish flavour to your concerts.Duration: 1:30

Soft-shoe Shuffle (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
Dating from the first decades of the 20th century and originating in vaudeville and the music hall, the soft-shoe shuffle was danced by tap dancers, wearing soft-shoes instead of their normal tap shoes. In this usually comic dance, the shoes were rubbed on the surface of the stage producing a characteristic 'swish'. Soft-shoe Shuffle can be made into a percussion feature by bringing the sandpaper blocks to the front of the stage - with added choreography, if required! A wonderful piece of musical humour for your concerts.Duration: 2:45

A Repton Fantasy (Flexible Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Parry, Hubert C. - Sparke, Philip
for Bb or Eb SoloistSir Hubert Parry (1848-1918) belongs to a forgotten generation of English composers who are often over-shadowed by Sir Edward Elgar, and the result has been that much of their work is little played or forgotten. In Parry's case, he is now mostly remembered for his hymn tunes, such as Jerusalem and Repton, both marvellous melodies, of course. The latter first appeared in Parry's oratorio Judith and was adapted as a hymn tune after the composer's death. The solo part can be played by a trumpet, clarinet or alto saxophone and will give your chosen soloist a chance to shine.Duration: 3:00

Eloise (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Ryan, Paul - Sparke, Philip
Paul and Barry Ryan were identical twin sons of 1950's pop singer Marion Ryan and were born on 24th October 1948. They were groomed for stardom and had started singing as a duo before their fifteenth birthday. They were signed by Decca in 1965 and brilliantly marketed as clean-cut fashion icons. Their first single 'Don't Bring Me Your Heartaches' reached the UK top twenty but their success as twin performers lasted only three years. In 1968 Barry embarked on a solo career while Paul concentrated on writing and producing. Eloise with its melodramatic vocal style and heavily orchestrated backing was an early success of this new collaboration and went on to be covered by a variety of artists, including punk legends The Damned.Duration: 5:30
