This remarkable piece captures the excitement, physical challenge, intensity and, ultimately, the thrill and sense of accomplishment a rider might experience during such a gruelling and demanding physical trial as Le Tour de France. Both tonal and non-tonal compositional materials, some indeterminate and serial techniques, special percussion (a six-tom-tom cluster, heavy chains and four metal plates) along with traditional and non-traditional development procedures are used -impressing upon listeners, through sound, a sense and feel of competitive bicycling, from the point of view of the athletes themselves. In hopes of imbuing the music with the flavour of the various cultures coming together for this contest, the composition contains extant source material as well - including La Marsellaise, The Star-Spangled Banner and a brief reference to The Eyes of Texas.Duration: 4.45

Written for four vocal soloists it was originally scored for a relatively large orchestra (including flutes (recorders), oboes and horns) and mixed choir. Although secular in character, the words describe how well a faithful shepherd keeps watch over his flock and hence has obvious allusions to the teachings of the Christian church. Over a period of four decades Jimmy Webb (b. 1946) has written hits for a number of singers including Glen Campbell, Art Garfunkel, Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Linda Ronstadt. His songs are often epic in character and include By the Time I Get to Phoenix; Up, Up and Away; Didn't We; Wichita Lineman and Galveston. MacArthur Park (1968) was unlike anything that had gone before it. Running at over 7 minutes, it is 2 or 3 times the length of most pop songs and has an extended orchestral interlude. Richard Harris' seminal recording topped the music charts in Europe, while peaking at number two on the U.S. charts. The Ukrainian Bell Carol is part of a large choral work entitled Shchedryk by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Dmytrovich Leontovych (1877-1921). It was first performed by students of Kiev University in December 1916. The tune is an adaptation of an old 'shchedrivka', a song traditionally sung on Ukrainian New Year's Eve (January 13th) which hopes for good fortune in the year to come. In Shchedryk, Leontovych added his own the lyrics which concern the legend claiming that when Jesus was born, all the bells on earth started ringing in his honour. The tune has since been the inspiration of at least four different Christmas carols, but Philip Sparke has sourced the original Ukrainian melody to create this stirring arrangement.Duration: 3:00
