Dance No. 2 (from Jazz Suite No.2) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Shostakovich, Dmitri - De Meij, Johan
In 1938 Shostakovich composed his Second Jazz Suite at the request of the recently founded State Orchestra for Jazz conducted by Victor Knushevitsky. This suite was originally scored for a complete symphony orchestra to which four saxophones, an accordion and a guitar had been added. The Jazz Suite no. 1 in three movements, composed in 1934, had been written for a smaller ensemble. The title 'Jazz Suite' is rather misleading, as the composer definitely uses the style of light music. Back in 1928, the twenty-two-year-old Shostakovich had already composed some light music. A bet among friends to make an orchestration of the popular song 'Tea for Two' in less then one hour time, caused him to compose 'Tahiti Trot'. Shostakovich easily won the bet as he completed the original and witty arrangement within only forty minutes!Duration: 3.45

Turkish March (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Beethoven, Ludwig van - Kobayashi, Mika
The Turkish March (Marcia alla turca) is a well-known classical march theme by Ludwig van Beethoven. It was written in the Turkish style, popular in music at the time. The theme was first used in Beethoven's Six Variations on an Original Theme, Op.76, of 1809. In 1811, Beethoven wrote an overture and incidental music to a play by August von Kotzebue called The Ruins of Athens (Op.113), which premiered in Pest in 1812. The Turkish March appears as movement four of the incidental music.Duration: 3.30

Circus Suite (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Johnson, Stuart
All the excitement of the Big Top is contained within four short movements, but the safety net is well in place in the shape of ample cross-cuing. This is longer than the average "easy" piece and slightly more difficult, presenting a real musical challenge, but the minimal necessary instrumentation still applies, and of course Johnson, Stuart's superb scoring ensures its effectiveness. The second movement features the tuba, and the third movement features alto saxophone (cued into horn).

Manhattan Pictures (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan
In this colourful composition, Jan van der Roost recreates the energetic and multi-racial city life in Manhattan, using four contrasting movements. The opening movement is rather short and rhythmical. In the second "Picture", a variety of musical entities accumulate into a coloured "sound curtain", on top of which the brass section presents a broad theme. In contrast to the two previous movements, the third movement is extremely quiet, featuring the first flute, clarinet an oboe in broad melodies. Again, the orchestration plays an essential role. Following on a majestic "tutti" (almost "movie-like....) the serenity of the very beginning reappears. Finally, the nervousness and dynamic style of the two first movements come back in an exciting apotheosis with rich and sometimes surprising instrumentation which explores the multiple possibilities of the large symphonic wind band to the full.Duration: 13.00
