Scenes of Russia - Elliot Del Borgo

The well-known folksong Meadowlands is the basis for this spectacular Russian fantasy. The cantabile opening is particularly nice for the woodwinds, and all the parts are quite playable for bands at the easy level. The bold nature of the melody allows the brass to open up their sound a bit, while the con spirito section offers interesting counterpoint and exciting rhythms. A general sense of the bleakness of a Russian landscape in winter, and the strength and determination of the Russian people, comes through.

Swords against the Sea - James L. Hosay

Blackbeard and his crew of ruffian freebooters, aboard the ship Queen Anne's Revenge, were the terrors of the Atlantic and the Caribbean in the early 18th century. Composer James L. Hosay captures those turbulent times in music with his vivid and exciting new tone poem, SWORDS AGAINST THE SEA. This presents an excellent opportunity for cross-curriculum teaching with history.SWORDS AGAINST THE SEA carves out new territory all its own. A rollicking sea chantey and the emotions of impending battle are described in the first two movements. Your audience will thrill to the sound and fury of battle in the final movement, as the most feared Pirate of his day finally meets his match. Go ahead! Raise your spyglass! Look ahead, look astern, look a'weather and a'lee!

The Great Highland Pipes - Mike Hannickel

Two melodies in the Scottish style meet head-on in this energetic new arrangement. Your students will love the "bagpipe sound" and rhythmic color of the Scottish "snap". This arrangement can also be used with young bands as a lesson in the concept of counterpoint. Each of the two main themes is clearly stated on its own, but remarkable things happen when they are played together. Through skillful selection of themes and contrapuntal composition, Mike Hannickel does a masterful job of melding these contrasting songs into a unified and energetic adventure into the Highlands.Fun to play, and a great style study!

Story of a Village - André Waignein

This work relates the story of Maasbracht, a town on the banks of the Meuse River in the Dutch province of Limburg. Like all fairy tales, the story begins serenely with ?Once upon a time?? The music evokes the atmosphere of this very pleasant region, where the gentle way of life is the key to happiness. A lively and joyful passage depicts the cheerfulness of the people of Maasbracht. Maasbracht, like many other towns, suffered during World War II: sound colours darken and pictures of destruction run through our mind. In the midst of despair there is hope, from grief comes new life. The future looks promising. The work leaves Maasbracht, looking forward to the 21st century withconfidence. A highly descriptive work that is suitable for any concert or contest situation.
