The Seventh Day - David Shaffer

Based on the hymn tune "My Shepherd Shall Supply My Need", this fantasia is a musical reflection of the biblical account of The Creation. A powerful programmatic piece that opens with the woodwind choir and as the piece develops the mood shifts to excitement and a feeling of exhilaration. The tension and musical drama is brought to a conclusion only in the last measure as the climax is suspended for a long electric moment with the decay of a single chime tone. Without a doubt this is David Shaffer's most aggressive work to date. Highly Recommended.

A Tribute to Mahler - Hermann Pallhuber

The poem "The Resurrection" by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock was set to music by Gustav Mahler in the fifth movement of his Second Symphony, known as the "Resurrection." The central passage from Mahler's musical adaptation was incorporated into "A Tribute to Mahler," a composition created in homage to Mahler, 100 years after his death. Powerful brass tones and delicate woodwind melodies alternate in a Mahleresque manner with horn and trumpet signals from a distance. The choir is delicately complemented by the solo alto saxophone. "A Tribute to Mahler" aims to, like a continuation "after a short repose," offer us a glimpse into the blissful world to which we will all eventually journey.

    Goodnight Moon - Eric Whitacre

Over the past few years I must have read Goodnight Moon to my son a thousand times - maybe more. Somewhere around reading number 500, I began hearing little musical fragments as I read, and over time those fragments began toblossom into a simple, sweet lullaby. I knew it was a long shot, but I asked my manager, Claire Long, to contact HarperCollins and see if they would allow the text to be set to music. To my surprise and delight they agreed - thefirst time they had ever allowed Goodnight Moon to be used in such a way. I composed the piece relatively quickly, originally setting the text for harp, string orchestra, and my son's mother, soprano Hila Plitmann. I laterarranged Goodnight Moon for SATB choir and piano. More recently, my dear friend Verena Msenbichler-Bryant arranged the piece for wind ensemble and soloist. The melody of Goodnight Moon will forever make me think of those quietnights, reading my son to sleep. -Eric Whitacre

    The Source - Bert Appermont

At the heart of this piece are several elements that inspired the composer. First of all: nature, infinite and inexhaustible, giving life and power, something bigger than humans can grasp. The composer used the Gregorian hymn 'Veni Creator Spiritus' as a leitmotiv to reflect this idea. A second element was the passing of David Maslanka, a dear friend of the composer, honoured in the work by a few musical 'echoes'. At the end of the work, there is a passage for optional choir in different possible settings. The Source was commissioned by the Banda Giovanlie Regionale ANBIMA FVG, Italy, and is an impressive, stirring and moving piece of music.

    Viva Noel - Shaffer

"Viva Noel" is a medley of glorious holiday favorites in a fast/slow/fast form. Opening with a musical fanfare based on the French hymn "He is Born the Holy Child" the arrangement transitions quickly into a fanciful rendition of "Deck the Halls." The following section opens with a beautiful brass choir adaptation of "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear" and develops into a lush, full band setting of this charming carol. The finale begins as a quick, light version of "Here We Come a-Wassailing" ending with a declarative brass fanfare with small bits of "Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella" and "Angels We Have Hear on High." This high-energy holiday arrangement features all sections of the ensemble with exceptional emphasis on the percussion writing. "Viva Noel!" will be a solid opener or closer for any holiday concert!

    Four Pictures - Árpád Balázs

The teachers under whom rpd Balzs (b.1937) studied composition - Ferenc Farkas, Aram Khachaturian and Goffredo Petrassi - each independently formed the opinion that with his lyrical gift rpd Balzs's true creative field would be that of choral music and wind ensembles. Their early predictions are borne out by the roughly two hundred and fifty works for choir and almost twenty for wind orchestra that the composer has since produced. It is interesting that in the suite entitled Ngy kp (Four pictures) the stylistic features of these two related musical fields are united. In it the wind instruments sing! It was not by chance that the expansive second movement was given the title Cantilena, while the slightly livelier but just as lyrical third movement was entitled Arietta. The opening movement of the work is a stridently jolly, energetic Indul (March), but not one of the rigidly military kind: the 6/8 rhythm contributes to its light-hearted character. This music is avowedly akin to the ballet music of Prokofiev. This choice series of four character pieces is crowned by Jtk (Play) in which conveying the effect of the mixture of lines moving in parallel and then colliding with each other may be more technically demanding, but is well worth the effort! Highlands Of Monroney - David Gorham

A two-movement work dedicated to the legendary band director, Paul Enix, from Midwest City, Oklahoma, Gorhams new composition opens with a beautiful lyrical section that features the rich, full sonorities of the woodwind choir. The contrasting second movement is in the style of a gigue, with lilting, catchy rhythms. This very musical piece will be an excellent contest or festival selection.
