Silent Noon - Ralph Vaughan Williams

Originally written by Vaughan Williams as a vocal setting of a sonnet by Dante Gabriel Rossini, this beautiful art song makes a dramatic musical statement through it flowing melodic lines and creative harmonies. Ed Huckeby has transformed this classic into a magnificent work for concert band, with colorful scoring featuring the woodwind choir as well as vulnerable, yet very playable, melodic lines in the horns and trumpets. "Silent Noon" is destined to become a new standard in the portfolio of great bands around the world.

    Viva Noel - Shaffer

"Viva Noel" is a medley of glorious holiday favorites in a fast/slow/fast form. Opening with a musical fanfare based on the French hymn "He is Born the Holy Child" the arrangement transitions quickly into a fanciful rendition of "Deck the Halls." The following section opens with a beautiful brass choir adaptation of "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear" and develops into a lush, full band setting of this charming carol. The finale begins as a quick, light version of "Here We Come a-Wassailing" ending with a declarative brass fanfare with small bits of "Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella" and "Angels We Have Hear on High." This high-energy holiday arrangement features all sections of the ensemble with exceptional emphasis on the percussion writing. "Viva Noel!" will be a solid opener or closer for any holiday concert!

    Four Pictures - Árpád Balázs

The teachers under whom rpd Balzs (b.1937) studied composition - Ferenc Farkas, Aram Khachaturian and Goffredo Petrassi - each independently formed the opinion that with his lyrical gift rpd Balzs's true creative field would be that of choral music and wind ensembles. Their early predictions are borne out by the roughly two hundred and fifty works for choir and almost twenty for wind orchestra that the composer has since produced. It is interesting that in the suite entitled Ngy kp (Four pictures) the stylistic features of these two related musical fields are united. In it the wind instruments sing! It was not by chance that the expansive second movement was given thetitle Cantilena, while the slightly livelier but just as lyrical third movement was entitled Arietta. The opening movement of the work is a stridently jolly, energetic Indul (March), but not one of the rigidly military kind: the 6/8 rhythm contributes to its light-hearted character.

    Goodnight Moon - Eric Whitacre

Over the past few years I must have read Goodnight Moon to my son a thousand times - maybe more. Somewhere around reading number 500, I began hearing little musical fragments as I read, and over time those fragments began to blossom into a simple, sweet lullaby. I knew it was a long shot, but I asked my manager, Claire Long, to contact HarperCollins and see if they would allow the text to be set to music. To my surprise and delight they agreed - the first time they had ever allowed Goodnight Moon to be used in such a way. I composed the piece relatively quickly, originally setting the text for harp, string orchestra, and my son's mother, soprano Hila Plitmann. I later arranged Goodnight Moon for SATB choir and piano. More recently, my dear friend Verena Msenbichler-Bryant arranged the piece for wind ensemble and soloist. The melody of Goodnight Moon will forever make me think of those quiet nights, reading my son to sleep. -Eric Whitacre

El Caracol Mifasol - Ferrer Ferran

El caracol (snail in Spanish) is the perfect illustration of the long slow process children must undertake when learning music. Ferrer Ferran composed this small musical poem to encourage the first, and sometimes difficult, steps in the fascinating world of music. The vocal part in this work can be performed by children taking their first steps in music. If there is no children's choir available the musicians in your band can sing the vocal part. This is a tremendously innovative piece that will help youngsters get involved in music-making.

    Last Christmas

As classic as Santa and Rudolph, George Michael's iconic Wham! hit has been covered by Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande, and now it's your band's turn. A snap to rehearse and program, this Chris M. Bernotas arrangement is suitable for both developing bands and more advanced ensembles to usher in the holiday season. If you have a combined music department concert, this would be an excellent closer to bring the choir (and even strings singing) in at the repeat of measure 49 for the last musical statement of the chorus. You could even print the lyrics in your holiday program and invite the audience to sing along. (2:30)
