Extra Score. This work was especially composed for Rachel Smith and the Regimental Band of Her Majesty's Coldtream Guards. It is essentially rhapsodic in nature and derives much of it's melodic material from the harmonic implication of the 'Neapolitan Sixth' chord - that of the flatten supertonic, mostly found in minor key tonalities. The composer gratefully acknowledges the assistance of Rachel Smith in editing the solo part for both performance and publication. This is the first concert-sized publication of the superb Sousa-Damrosch "Star Spangled Banner." Their Ab version remains one of the most standard and sing-able arrangements of our National Anthem. It was richly harmonized in 1917 by Walter Damrosch and skillfully arranged by John Philip Sousa. This arrangement has been carefully editied by Keith Brion. The full score includes fascinating historical background.

The symphonic poem Night on a Bald Mountain took its inspiration from a story by the well known Russian writer Nicola Gogol. Mussorgsky took no steps to promote his masterpiece and it was only after his death when Rimsky-Korsakov was looking through the enormous stack of manuscripts that the work resurfaced. Written above the score, Mussorgsky gives a brief description of the story of Night on a Bald Mountain: Gathering Witches, their gossip and chit-chat; The Procession of Satan; Pagan Worship of Satan and Witches Sabbath. This transcription for concert band by Tohru Takahasi remains true to the orchestral original. 0:10:56

Extra Score. Omaggio is a homage to Italy and all things Italian. A brief Burla of a fast-moving scherzo character pays tribute to Verdi. Barcarola is sterner stuff - a grim black gondola evokes the Venice of the Serenissima. The movement is an actual gondola song coupled with the jaunty fanfares of Monteverdi and Gabrieli's Sonata pian'e forte. The most substantial movement is the final Palio, an unashamedly programmatic evocation of the historic Sienese horse-race, ending with a Tuscan folk-song. Duration: 16-18 mins
