Score only. Interruption Overture is the musical inverse of Bryant's Chester Leaps In. In the latter, a familiar theme interrupts angular, dissonant music, whereas Interruption Overture consists of a straightforward theme in Bb major repeatedly interrupted by dissonant chords and bursts of simple aleatory ideas. These techniques are intended to serve as educational tools in addition to their musical function, exposing younger musicians to a broader-than-usual musical palette. When John Gay assembles the music for The Beggar's Opera in 1727, he used popular tunes of the day and Dr. Pepusch provided orchestral accompaniments. More recently, Frederic Austin and Benjamin Britten have been amongst many composers who have adapted these melodies to their own purposes. Duration: 15 mins. KARMAN LINE, The (Prestige Concert Band Extra Score) - Meechan, Peter
Extra Score. This work takes inspiration from photos taken at the Karman Line (an invisible line 100 kilometres above sea level and is the boundary where the atmosphere of Earth ends, and outer space begins). It portrays the vastness of Space, the mechanics of Space (including shuttles and astronauts), as well as stunning views of the Earth. The main thematic material for the piece is modal, and is developed from key pitches and intervals that define the character and nature of the mixolydian mode. These are gradually introducted as accented notes over the opening ostinato. This modal music is gradually juxtaposed with a more conventional minor scale originally creating conflict and tension, but eventually harmony between these two sound-worlds. This work brought Mascagni overnight fame after his wife - without him knowing - entered the score in a composition contest and it won first prize. Cavalleria rusticana became an incredible success, overshadowing the premiere of his next opera, L'Amico Fritz.
