Goethe's Faust has already been set to music by various renowned musicians, such as Berlioz, Busoni and Spohr, and indeed Charles Gounod, who built his eponymous opera around the tale. Gounod's Faust is primarily known for its lovely melodies and its beautifully expressive vocal parts and subtle orchestrations. One of the high points of this opera is doubtless this impressive Cavatina ("Salut, demeure chaste et pure"). Wil van der Beek has arranged the Cavatina with the euphonium as solo instrument.

(2014) Vulcan for Concert Band is Grammy award winning composer Michael Daugherty's first work for the high school and intermediate level college band. The work is a colorful homage to Gene Roddenberry's interstellar universe as depicted in the classic American television series Star Trek (1966-69). The title refers to the fiery planet Vulcan, home world of half-human, half-Vulcan Mr. Spock. As the rational-minded science officer aboard the starship Enterprise (commanded by the hot-blooded Captain James T. Kirk), Mr. Spock grapples with the fascinating predicament of making decisions predicated on human emotion versus Vulcan logic. Daugherty has composed stirring, yet highly structured music that alludes to the Vulcan Pon Farr ritual, Vulcan telepathic mind-melds, and the volcanic planet itself. At the the Ann Arbor, Michigan world premiere (utilizing the combined forces of the Pioneer, Huron and Skyline High School bands), Vulcan was an immediate hit and will surely become one of Daugherty's most performed works. 2019 coincided with the 500-year anniversary of the death of Leonardo Da Vinci, one of the greatest men of genius in history, a universal genius who was a scientist, philosopher, architect, painter, musician, engineer, anatomist, botanist, designer, and planner. This composition entitled La Matita di Leonardo (Leonardo's Pencil), represents an ideal journey into the mind of the Tuscan genius: in the first part of the piece, percussion instruments underline the ticking of the passage of time that anticipates the birth of the idea, while short thematic cells in various instruments alternate, drawing the rhythmic melodic line. On this background, we hear the main theme entrusted to the dark tones of trombone and euphonium. The music proceeds with a growing pace and an adventurous character to represent the genesis of Leonardo's machines, which are in fact the result of the drawings of his pencil. In the second, more animated part, a new theme is introduced, varied, and elaborated, thus giving life to a vigorous movement meant to describe the drawings that come to life, leaving the pages of Leonardo's codes. In the coda the two themes overlap, transporting the listener towards a resolute and rhythmically energetic conclusion in an enthralling and engaging finale.

£144.99Andante & Rondo - Antonio Capuzzi
Antonio Capuzzi (August 1, 1755 - March 28, 1818) was an Italian violinist and composer who studied violin with Nazari and composition with Bertoni. In 1805 he moved to Bergamo, where he was professor of violin at the Instituto Musicale and leader of the orchestra at Teatro Riccardi. He was highly regarded there both as a teacher and a performer. Although popular in his day, most of his music is now forgotten; his most commonly performed piece today is the Concerto for Double Bass. All of Capuzzi's known compositions were written during his Venetian years. It was in Venice that Capuzzi became close friends with Domenico Dragonetti, Beethoven's virtuoso bassist. It isspeculated that Capuzzi wrote his Concerto for Double Bass for Dragonetti. Gerald Oswald has made a fine arrangement of the second (Andante) and third (Rondo) movements of the concerto to feature either euphonium or tuba with concert band. The solo part is also available in an edition with piano accompaniment.

The one-act opera Suor Angelica is set in the cloisters of an Italian convent at the end of the seventeenth century. Of noble birth, Angelica has been a nun for seven years, forced there by her family as punishment for an unknown sin. When her aunt visits her, she tells Angelica that her child had died. This terrible news becomes the reason for her only aria, Senza Mamma, a heart-wrenching song of restraint and dignity to her little 'angel in heaven' (Angelo del Cielo). The set contains solo parts, for soprano voice, cello and a duet for soprano and cello. There is also an optional solo part for trombone or euphonium.

Philip Sparke's Sinfonietta No. 4 is comprised of three parts that are played as an uninterrupted whole. The third movement is a salute to the sponsor of this commission: various percussion instruments conjure up sounds reminiscent of a carpenter's workshop, accompanied by a unison orchestral passage in a scat style.
