Clair de Lune was originally written for piano, as the 3rd movement of the Suite Bergamasque by French composer Claude Debussy. This arrangement for trombone and wind orchestra was written at the request of Joe Alessi, principaltrombone of the New York Philharmonic and internationally renowned soloist. There is an alternative solo part included for alto saxophone.

Glorioso was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, the 'Siena Wind Orchestra'. The work opens after a short aleatoric intro, with an energetic and brassy 'one tone fanfare'. The note F acts as an omnipresent note, and is also used as a bridge into the second, rather static movement. A noble sounding theme leads to an impressive climax, shortly followed by the spectacular and virtuoso finale, which is built on the musical elements that have been heard before. Stylistically, this sparkling finale is clearly influenced by Dmitri Shostakovich, hence the use of the famous signature used by the Russian Master: C D E flat B (or C flat). A glorious finish to a special workthat highlights various facets of the modern concert band.

This celebratory work, which Philip Sparke wrote for the 20th anniversary of the Nottingham Concert Band, starts with a hymn-like theme played as a fanfare in the brass. Commissioned by Feldmusik Baar in Unterageri, Switzerland. The work is in the form of a single movement in a sprightly, vigorous tempo throughout, and built from three contrasting themes, with the music evolving (hence its title) from the interplay of these three themes, one brash and powerful, the second gay and lilting, and the third lyrical and reflective. The combination of, and contrasts between, these three motivic elements are treated with all of the resources of the modern, fully integrated wind orches-tra to create a brilliant texture.

The "Suite for Wind Orchestra" has three parts. The introductory "Symphonic Movement" is based on two opposite musical ideas. The first is chromatic, whereas the second is rather diatonically harmonized. The "Nocturne" or second part is contrasting with the preceding part and is written in the minor key. The quiet atmosphere at the end of the "Nocturne" is abruptly interrupted by the "Toccata". This part, a "Vivace", leading into a "Presto" at the end, has a wild, passionate character.

£141.60Story Book - Daniele Carnevali
The piece, commissioned in 2001 by the Banda Civica di Soncino, is one of several works that have been specifically written for this prestigious wind orchestra by a number of well-known North European composers. "Story Book" is inspired by a group of tales that are a mixture of history and legend- the former based on historical facts, the latter on traditional beliefs- all connected with life in Soncino (a farming and industrial community in the Cremona plain). The tales are all involves events in the castle (which is still in very good condition) and life at court during the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance period. As the piece develops, it recounts the legend of strange presences in the castle tower (Phantom of the red tower), the bloody battle against invaders (The battle), the foggy landscape and strange female figures seen floating over marshland where there was once a lake (Enchanted lake), and finally the ceremony in the castle's Piazza d'Armi to celebrate victory over the invaders.

Although one can strive for original music in the field of the wind orchestra, the arrangement still has its place. When one hears Mozart's moving masonic funeral music played by a symphonic or fanfare band, one can be forgiven for thinking that the composer had actually composed it with this instrumentation in mind. This is even more the case with lesserknown classical works when the listener may well be unfamiliar with the composition.
