Forgotten Children - Peter Meechan
Forgotten Children is a short work for wind orchestra and electronic accompaniment. Adapted from it's original form (for brass quartet and CD, Forgotten Children was written for The Desert Winds and their conductor Chuck Maguire, to whom the piece is dedicated.Whilst conceiving the piece, the subject of the war in Syria dominated news headlines, specifically the refusal by Western nations to intervene. There were, of course, political reasons at the heart of the decision, complicated by a situation that no one understood in a country no one understands. The harrowing images of chemical weapons being used on children was seemingly not enough to persuade the West that their help was needed, but those silent voices fell on even deafer ears. They were, and still are, the Forgotten Children.Please download the electronic accompaniment below.

Origins - Peter Meechan
Origins is in three movements, with each movement having a different subject matter, all linked by the idea of origins: the first movement refers to musical origins; the second to the origins of life; and the final movement to the space exploration - the research of all origins.The first movement is based on a short motif, heard in the first three notes the soloist plays. These three notes cover the interval of a minor third (an interval that often plays a crucial role in my music) on which the whole concerto is built. The soloist and accompaniment interplay freely throughout the opening section, before an ostinato accompaniment appears in the woodwinds - over which the soloist sounds a long legato melody. A short cadenza follows and a return to the opening material leads the movement to an end.The second movement, titled Harry's Song, is - as tradition dictates - a slow movement. Happy and reflective in nature, the main melody was written on the evening that my closest friend, Mark Bousie (a fine euphoniumist himself), and his wife Jayne, had their first child - Harry Bousie. It seemed only fitting that this song should be written for Harry in celebration.The final movement brings me back to a lifelong fascination with space, and in this particular movement, the Space Shuttle Discovery. Having completed 39 missions (including flying the Hubble telescope in to orbit), and spent a total of 365 days in space, SS Discovery made its final voyage in 2011 and was taken to the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. in April 2012. This final movement, titled Discovery, pays tribute to the great shuttle whose missions inspired millions across the generations.Origins was commissioned by Marco Schneider, Adrian Schneider and the Dunshan Symphonic Wind Orchestra, Beijing, China.

The Pohutukawa Stands - Peter Meechan
The earthquake that hit Christchurch in February 2011 took the lives of 181 people. Being asked to write this work in their memory was an honour, but I didn't want it to simply be performed as a memorial. I wanted to compose a work that conveyed the sadness and grief for those lost - a work of remembrance - but also a piece of music that represented peace, hope and strength.The title and dedication come direct from the commissioners of the work, Woolston Brass Band. The Pohutukawa Trees stay standing and secure, defiant of the earthquake, in Christchurch's 'Garden City', and the Pohutukawa tree also has special significance beyond their physical appearance.According to Maori mythology, the spirits of the dead travel to Cape Reinga on their journey to the afterlife to leap off the headland and climb the roots of the 800 year old Pohutukawa tree and descend to the underworld to return to their traditional homeland of Hawaiiki-a-nui, using the Te Ara Wairua, the 'Spirits' pathway'.The Pohutukawa Stands is dedicated to the lives lost in the Christchurch earthquake.The wind orchestra scoring was completed in 2013.

The Gilded Theatre - Kenneth Hesketh
The Gilded Theatre was commissioned by the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain on the occasion of its fortieth anniversary. They gave the first performance on 10th August 2008, at St. John's Smith Square, London conducted by James Gourlay.The Gilded Theatre can, in some ways, be seen as a continuation of dramatic forms as presented in a previous piece by Hesketh, Diaghilev Dances. Unlike the Dances, however the music in The Gilded Theatre is conceived as one continuous span and stretches of music are also subtitled and refer to stock characters or scenarios redolent of the commedia dell'arte or 17th Century French Theatre.The subtitles are Rideau, Les Idiots Ou Les Amants, Le Combat Commence, Desespoir, L'apparition, Folie, La Mort, Rideau. The music narative progresses through dramatic, comedic, romantic and aggressive moods supporting the idea of the abstract play to which the the above subtitles refer. Throughout the piece the composer has sought to challenge the players both technically and emotionally, and it is the players themselves who are in fact the protagonists in the piece.

East Coast Pictures was commissioned by the British Youth Wind Orchestra with funds from the National Westminster Bank plc. These three short 'pictures' were inspired by several visits to a small part of the American East Coast, an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people. Movement 1: Shelter Island is a small island situated near the end of Long Island, a few hours drive east of New York. In the summer it becomes a crowded tourist trap; but in the winter it is gloriously deserted and bravely faces the onslaught of the turbulent Atlantic, shrouded in sea mists and driving rain. This 'picture' is a fond memory of a winter weekend on Shelter Island. Movement 2: In upstate New York lie the Catskills Mountains--an extraordinary combination of tranquillity and power, peace and majesty. Once seen, they call you back again and again. Movement 3: New York - or to be more precise, Manhattan. For anyone who is familiar with this bizarre and wonderful city, here is a 'picture' that needs no explanation. A quiet, gentle piece dedicated to the Isle of Man Wind Orchestra. In February 2014 Rob Wiffin went to the Isle of Man to conduct a workshop with the Isle of Man Wind Orchestra. The year is particularly significant - Island of Culture 2014 is the largest cultural celebration in the history of the Isle of Man. This simple lullaby does not contain any traditional Manx material but was written specifically for the wind orchestra. It is in familiar ABA form but the middle section adds just a moment of piquancy and tension before the return of the original theme dissipates it.Duration: 3.12

Intermezzo is the second movement of Satoshi Yagisawa's Clarinet Concerto. The concerto was first performed by Higashi-Hiroshima Wind Ensemble in Hiroshima, Japan in 2010 with guest performer Shinsuke Hashimoto, clarinettist with the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra and was conducted by Atsushi Kageyama. Inspiration for this work came from the fact that both Satoshi Yagisawa and Shinsuke Hashimoto graduated from Musashino Academia Musicae. Clarinet Concerto is the pinnacle of Satoshi Yagisawa's Concerto Series which also features his Suite Concertante for Piano and Wind Orchestra, Trumpet Concerto, Trombone Concerto, Saxophone Concertino, and Concertino for Solo Percussion and Wind Orchestra. Yagisawa's characteristic heartfelt theme in the second movement is especially popular and consequently, entitled Intermezzo, it is often performed independently.Duration: 5.00
