Program NotesThe life story of John Newton is well-documented and his occupation as a slave-trader and subsequent conversion and ordination as curate of Olney, Buckinghamshire, well-known. This incredible story probably makes the words to Amazing Grace! so remarkable, although, Newton can only be credited for the first three verses. This arrangement, although not technically difficult, will require a sustained sound towards the end during its climactic conclusion. It is therefore advisable that the physical demands be understood before commencement so that the correct measurement of exertion can be made throughout the presentation.

Forgotten Children - Peter Meechan
Forgotten Children is a short work for wind orchestra and electronic accompaniment. Adapted from it's original form (for brass quartet and CD, Forgotten Children was written for The Desert Winds and their conductor Chuck Maguire, to whom the piece is dedicated.Whilst conceiving the piece, the subject of the war in Syria dominated news headlines, specifically the refusal by Western nations to intervene. There were, of course, political reasons at the heart of the decision, complicated by a situation that no one understood in a country no one understands. The harrowing images of chemical weapons being used on children was seemingly not enough to persuade the West that their help was needed, but those silent voices fell on even deafer ears. Capriccio - Gustav Holst
Holst composed this short, light-hearted but tuneful work in 1932, while on a visit to the USA, for Nathaniel Shilkret's concert jazz band. He was asked to use a folk tune but invented one of his own. The piece was not performed and remained in manuscript. This version for wind band was arranged by John Boyd with the approval of Imogen Holst.

Capriccio Italien was based on Italian folk songs and was composed by Tchaikovsky in 1880. The work was inspired by his trip to Rome. This fantasy utilizes the capriccio's themes in order to capture the essence of Tchaikovsky's music for concert band. Although technically reduced for medium to medium-easy ensembles, it still retains all the fire and energy of the masterwork. This is a wonderful selection to not only introduce a classical composer but to also work on phrasing, balance, and dynamic contrasts.
