The Way to Heaven (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

The Way to Heaven (Droga do Nieba) was commissioned by the Royal Air Force Music Services. 2015 was the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, which took place between July and October 1940, when the courageous fighter pilots of the Royal Air Force thwarted Hitler's ambitions to launch an invasion on the UK. The Way to Heaven opens with fluttering woodwind figures and brass fanfares, which build to a climax before a change of key introduces a short quotation for the Polish National Anthem - Mazurek Dbrowskiego. This fades and you can hear the signal to scramble and the throaty sounds of the squadron's Merlin engines bursting into life before they line up to take off. This leads to the main thematic material of the work, which depicts the heaven-bound flight of 303 Squadron as it climbs to intercept the incoming Messerschmitt 109s. A brief allusion to the Polish national anthem brings the piece to a triumphant close.Duration: 4.30

Laguna di Grado (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob

Picture yourself in the marvellous paradise of Italy's Grado Lagoon. The magnificent display of colour and the salty scent of sea air combine with the fragrant tamarisk to create a unique atmosphere. In this glorious haven time stands still - except for the flight of the seagulls and the slow flood tide. From a distance you hear an adagio coming through the air from a procession of boats. Its solemn tones dissipate into the landscape of the lagoon.Duration: 5:00

Escadrille (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Orcino, Leonard A.

Early in World War I (1916), prior to the USA entering the conflict, Americans joined the French Air Corps. They were originally called the Escadrille Americaine and the name was changed to Escadrille de Lafayette after protest from the Germans that America was not in the war. The Escadrille had a reputation for daring recklessness and a party atmosphere. The corps mascots were two lion cubs, Whiskey and Soda. The insignia was an American Indian head with a flowing war bonnet. The entire squadron merged with the American Air corps (1918) once the USA entered the war.Duration: 2.30

Fighting Falcon March (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Stalter, Todd

Fighting Falcon March was written for the Eureka Middle School 6th Grade Band from Eureka, Illinois. It is a simple yet tuneful and inspiring march that is ideally suited for young musicians learning to play in the march-style. In his youth, the composer was fascinated by aircraft of all kinds, and happened to live near an Air National Guard base that hosted a squadron if F-16 "Fighting Falcons." These nimble and sleek jets could regularly be seen flying over the area, and they never ailed to stir feelings of awe and patriotism as they knifed through the air. Duration: 1.30

The Kings Go Forth (Concert Band - Score only) - Gregson, Edward

This work was commissioned jointly by the Royal Air Force Music Service and an American Universities Consortium and received its world premiere during the 1996 RAF British Tour. It is scored for large symphonic wind band, with the addition of voices. The work is a sequel to the highly successful The Sword and the Crown which was premiered in 1991 by the mass bands of the RAF (and also was an RAF commission). That work was based on music written for the Royal Shakespeare Company productions of The Plantagenets and Henry IV, parts 1 and 2 (for productions between 1988 and 1991).The Kings go Forth is similarly based on musical material for those productions. It uses different thematic elements and incorporates them into a three-movement suite entitled: The Church; The People; The State. This reflects the fact that in Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, Shakespeare introduces The People as an important element in the dramatic structure. The Church and The State are, of course, both leitmotivs throughout the entire plays. An Agnus Dei is heard at the outset from a solo voice. The ensuing Dies Irae is a fast and, at times, quite violent dance. The two sections which form the basis of the second movement, The People, concentrate on popular elements and reflect to some extent the tavern scenes in the plays. The two ideas presented are a harvest hymn reflecting the country scenes set in Gloucestershire, and a jazzy, 'up-tempo' dance based on the medieval song, Sumer is icumen in. The third movement, The State, deals with the Kings theme in the title of the piece. The juxtaposition of battle music with funeral music for Henry IV and Henry VI leads to a reworking of the leitmotif from the beginning of the work. The final section is Coronation music for Henry V, eventually leading to a triumphant climax. - Edward GregsonDuration: 17.15Recorded on QPRM 125D Festival of Music 1996, Massed Bands of the Royal Air ForceRecorded on QPRM 134D The Kings Go Forth, Royal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra

Frida's Whiskers Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

David Well composed 'Frida's Whiskers' in commemoration of his own cat, who met an untimely end. Frida (whose real name was 'Godefrida van Coopersburg thoe Nieuwenhuys') was a lively creature, who led a playful and uncomplicated life. She used to sleep in her basket for hours, but when she woke up she upset the entire house and its furnishing. Curtains were inspected from top to bottom and flower pots fell from window-sills just like that! Outside, in the open air she was in her element. She used to frolic, bouncing into the air. After such playful moods she would return to her basket tired but satisfied where, being the cleanly cat that she was, she subjected her entire body, whiskers included, to a thorough wash. 04:30

LINDISFARNE RHAPSODY, A (Flute Solo)(Prestige Concert Band) - Sparke, Philip

Commissioned by Kenneth Bell, principal flute of the Central Band of the Royal Air Force, this delightful work is challenging but approachable and the perfect vehicle for your star flautist! (Grade 5) Performance time 13'31". "Good flautists will find this a good piece to add to their repertoires, as it presents different challenges to the standard solo fare. The solo line is particularly well set against the band as it rarely travels to the lower register of the flute. The work opens with an extended section of lyricism followed by skittish dance. The central ''andante con moto'' is particularly delicate before the final section heads off and ends in a thoroughly unexpected conclusion!"
