The Forbidden Caverns - Quincy C. Hilliard

A legend that describes the fate of an Indian princess comes to life in this work by one of music education's best friends, Quincy C. Hilliard. Slightly contemporary in nature, the work features an extensive rubato alto sax solo. Dramatic and powerfully triadic, in the Hilliard tradition, this is an excellent work for most any programming situation. (6:30)

    Escapades - Brian Balmages

Premiered at the 2005 Michigan Music Educators Conference, Escapades was commissioned by the Grand Valley State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble under the baton of Barry D. Martin, with Arthur Campbell as clarinet soloist. Since the premiere, it has been scheduled for additional performances in the United States and abroad. The piece gets its inspiration from the title, which can be defined as "a usually adventurous action that runs counter to approved or conventional conduct." This piece is a series of changing "escapades" (or variations) which develop and explore different aspects of the opening thematic material. The entire work builds into a free improvisational section before all elements are united in the final presto.

    Firescape - David Marlatt

is the third piece in a series of "elements" inspired works. Through music it demonstrates the various characteristics of fire described by the titles of each section: "Hephaestus---God of Fire," "By the Glow of a Candle," and "Wildfire!" Hephaestus was the Greek god of fire and forges and was blacksmith for the gods. The sound of his anvil can be clearly heard in this section. The smooth reflective middle section features solos for flute, trumpet, and trombone before the percussion section takes over in the fast, energetic, and driving rhythms that bring this exciting work to a close.

North Shore Overture - David Marlatt

North Shore Boulevard is a street in Burlington, Canada near where settlers landed their ships and established their family roots in the early 1800s. Times were tough but so were they. This piece is split into sections depicting the people and the events that occurred at that time. Full of character and interesting rhythms, this unique overture would work equally well for concert or contest use. This is a great piece to expose developing players to lots of syncopation and some "extra flat notes" not commonly used for music at this level. North Shore Overture is an excellent end of year piece or something to start off a higher level band as their first piece of the year. (2:25)
