£135.70Romanesco - Luís Cardoso
Romanesco is a Symphonic Poem of an epic narrative depicting the medieval fights between the Christians and Moors. It begins with the plain-chant of the monks, inside the walls of the monastery who are then interrupted by the arrival of the Moors entering the walls disguised as jongleurs, and thereby provoking a battle. The central section is a Adagio Elegiaco, where our hero travels all over the village and laments all the destruction. Relying strongly on the main themes, the last section develops into the glorious final battle. This work is predominantly based around the environment modal and the polyrhythmic characteristics of medieval music. Conducted by the composer with his own band in the Ateneu Vilafranquense International Wind Band Contest, Romanesco achieved the biggest applause and the highest recognition of the public and the international jury.

Indeed, in collaboration with Lennaert Nijgh, Boudewijn de Groot wrote numerous fine songs for other artists as well as for himself. In this medley you can hear successively the songs 'Strand' (Beach), 'Beneden alle peil' (No level at all), 'Mijnheer de President' (Mister President), 'Tante Julia' (Aunt Julia) and, of course, 'Avond' (Evening). Thanks to these great successes 'Boudewijn' will not only be an extremely popular concert piece for all Dutch speaking audiences, but any audience.

Opera in two acts and eleven scenes in French language by the French master composer Ida Gotkovsky. This piece is composed in 1989. Ida Gotkovy is a very well known composer of the wind orchestra movement in the world. For all her work of art she says she wants to "create a universal work and ensure by a modern language, with vigorous structures, the unity of musical expression through all times".

£38.20Hoch und Deutschmeister Marsch - D. Ertl
Dominik Ertl (1857-1911) was subsequently musician, drum major and assistant conductor with the Band of the Austrian Infantry Regiment Number 4, better known as the 'Hoch-und Deutschmeister Regiment'. He was very popular in the fashionable Vienna high society of the last decades of the nineteenth century. He left the army to tour all over Europe with his own orchestra. He composed some ten marches but only the 'Hoch- und Deutschmeister' march became internationally famous. It is of course dedicated to the illustrious regiment and, though considered as the most musical of all Austrian military marches, it never became the official regimental march.

Adolf Scherzer was military bandmaster with the 7th Bavarian Infantry Regiment at Ingolstadt from 1849 to 1864. His Bayerischer Defilier Marsch (Bavarian Parade March), dating from the second half of the nineteenth century, is one of the most popular German marches of all times. The fanfarelike trumpet calls backed by chromatic woodwind passages give this solemn march its quite original character. Willy Hautvast's fine arrangement for the modern wind band makes this legendary march finally available to all our wind bands.

Goldene Kameraden - James Barnes
"Goldene Kameraden" was commissioned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Musikverlag RUNDEL. The title of the piece is a combination of the golden anniversary of the company and all my friends who work there - but it is also a humorous pun on one of my favorite German marches: "Alte Kameraden". Although marches are rather out of favor in the U.S. these days - unless they are by John Philip Sousa - I love to write them. And so I was happy to have the opportunity to compose this for Thomas Rundel, his family and the team at Musikverlag RUNDEL. The strict form of marches and the necessary march-like clichs required may seem restricting to other composers, but I perceive this as a musical challenge. It is like completing a crossword puzzle: one must go by all the traditional rules" but still produce something creative.

One can easily imagine in the days of Castes and Kings, how this composition may spark the feeling of what it may have been like for Knights of the Kingdoms to not only protect the Lords of the Castle, but also be chivalrous to the Ladies of the Court. Dancing at the feasts and festivals, escorting the royalty to various events. Knights had much more to do than fight. They were allowed to have fun. Sometimes. Like all of our Grade compositions, its main purpose besides giving good and interesting music for young musicians to play, is that it is an opportunity for the band director to teach some aspect of music. This is a great composition for introducing eighth notes and following dynamics. No clarinet crosses the break, and the 1st trumpet's highest note is A (in the staff). Everyone plays rhythmically together. Only the drum part may vary. All chords of the diatonic scale are used to make the harmony more interesting with no accidentals.

While I have written the piece in g minor, I have thrown in some diminished 7 chords and added some v chords for extraordinary sounds and novelty that students (and teachers who are tired of hearing I-iv-v-I over and over) are sure to latch on to and enjoy. The ranges on all of the instruments are well within the grade level of the piece, with Trumpet 1 going as high as 4th line D (just a couple of times), flute going no higher than their "C" and Trombone hitting their high E-flat one time.
