Showdown for Band - Gilbert Tinner

Showdown for Band was written as a compulsory exercise for the Third International Light Music Competition at St. Gallen, Switzerland in 1998. The intention of the composer was to write a piece in a light music style that would at the same time challenge the various bands, particularly in the area of rhythm. The work is divided into four parts: Opening, Ballad, Finale and Ending. Using melodies that are easy on the ear and varied instrumentation, many facets of the entire band are displayed. The solo in the middle part can be played by either soprano or alto saxophone, or even by a flugel horn. The impressive composition contains many musical elements, which makes the work anespecially suitable piece with which to open a light classical concert

Butterfly Overture - Peter Kleine Schaars

Doesn?t everyone get butterflies in the stomach every now and then? Every person has known moments of being in love. Accordingly, in Butterfly Overture a charming love theme has been employed, which is introduced by the alto saxophone in the slow middle passage. Additionally, the butterfly is a cheerful flutterer that never moves in a straight line but always with an unexpected motion. In the Vivace the flute initially performs the fluttering theme, after which it has been instrumented in diverse variations throughout the entire band. In Japan, July the 7th is a holiday known as Tanabata, for which large celebrations are held throughout the country. The holiday is based on a legend about a young man and a young woman who are separated by the Milky Way and can only see each other once a year on this night. The Seventh Night of July is Itaru Sakai's musical interpretation of this romantic legend. The alto saxophone and euphonium solos during the middle movement represent the two main themes from the legend.

    Aquarium - Johan de Meij

The Suite 'Aquarium' is Johan de Meij's third composition for symphonic band and features six tropical fishes, each of them represented by a motif, and surfacing as such in several guises. The composition consists of three movements of which the second and third merge uninterruptedly into each other. I) Allegretto grazioso (Neon Tetra, Electric Eel and Angelfish) II) Andante / Adagio (Sea Horse and Zebrafish) III) Finale: Allegro giocoso (Guppy & Co.) The Neon Tetra motif functions as a kind of 'Leitmotiv' and descibes the beautifully coloured, frisky fish: A number of variants have been derived from this theme and will also appear in the other movements. The Electric Eel in fact is not represented by a motif, but by a rhythm based on the restless electric pulses made audible in some aquaria. The Angel fish is represented by elegant cluster chords. In the second movement the Sea Horse emerges out of the water vegetation and starts a dialogue with the Zebrafish, which is represented by one melodic phrase in unison, getting more and more threatening by added parallel fifths and octaves. Simultaneously with the Sea Horse motif the Neon Tetra theme emerges, this time in 3/4 time and in Eb minor. The third movement starts with only two instruments (trumpet and xylophone), but as it is often the case with Guppies their number rapidly increases. Piccolo and Alto Saxophone introduce the Guppy Theme followed by several instrumental combinations. Every theme from the first movement 'swims by' once more, after which the principal motif leads us to a brilliant ending.

Three Celtic Dances - Brian Balmages

This three-movement work is based on various Scottish dance forms and includes a combination of authentic and original music. The opening Reel begins with a light-hearted presentation of the melody in typical Scottish fashion. As the movement develops, rhythms and harmonies become more intense and driving before a burst of percussion brings it to a sudden close. The second movement, Air, uses solo alto saxophone in a lush and lyrical setting of Well May I Behold My Faithful Brown-Hair'd Maid. The theme, presented in two contrasting settings, becomes extremely powerful with soaring countermelodies before returning to the tranquility of the opening. The final movement, Jig, makes use of expansive percussion as it celebrates one of the most well-known Celtic dance forms. The composer layers themes and various sounds throughout as the work builds to a furious conclusion supported by an enormous battery of percussion. Thrilling!
