Score & Parts. Canyons is a response to the imposing landscape of the American South West, an exploration of musical ideas. The piece falls into four main sections. Following a build-up in the brass and woodwind, there is a slowish first section with massive chords, percussive pounding and some contrapuntal development of the work's main thematic idea. This is followed by a brief scherzo and then a slow movement which again derives from chordal material and another contrapuntal development. The fourth section is an extended Allegro Vivace, dominated by a dance-like theme introduced by the trumpets and an important motif heard at the start by the brass and percussion. After the final climax, the Adagio epilogue leads the music to a quiet close, the solo piccolo restating the cornet figure heard at the opening of the work. (Grade 4.5) Duration: 15 mins. A spectacular dive via an extended chromatic scale immediately submerges us in a charged and somewhat archaic-feeling atmosphere. Trumpets, horns and trombones resound in rhythmic patterns, buttressed by restless motifs in the percussion. A second theme, in the woodwinds, begins much calmer but is quickly pushed aside by that same brass offensive. This introduction is the musical expression of the sometimes tumultuous early history of the town of Peer in Belgium. It closes with a D scale played over two octaves and repeated three times, symbolizing the church steeples that dominate the townscape. Peer has the credentials of a town, and people should know about it.There follows a rhythmic, turbulent passage: in the course of history, Peer has not been spared the ravages of war, arson, occupation, epidemic and other evils. In contrast, a slow, pastoral, lyrical part expresses the periods of peace and prosperity the town has known, as well as the serene geographic setting that still characterizes the place. Various instruments in groups are developed in solo style while the accompaniment displays vast, painterly images of sound. Now and then an exotic intonation is heard: a variety of peoples and cultures have left their mark on the town.This episode of tranquility and peacefulness comes to a sudden end when, via a surprising, almost chaotic transitional passage, we are in effect transported back to our own time. A hopeful, festive march expresses the confidence in the future that the Royal Concert Band of Peer exudes. This confidence is wholly justified: under the direction of conductor Willy Fransen, the 95 members of the concert band have experienced an extended period of good fortune, and the 75 musicians of the youth band - and the 45 little musicians of the mini-band - are involved in thriving operations. 0:13:15

The original recording featured vocalist Shirley Bassey and in keeping with the original Otto Schwarz's arrangement contains an optional part for solo voice. Excelsior Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
Excelsior was composed by Rob Goorhuis in the year 2000 on the occasion of the 75th anniversary in 2001 of the Amsterdam-based concert-band Jong Excelsior. Excelsior is a one-movement fantasia, consisting of contrasting themes. The first theme (the Excelsior theme) is characterized by angular figures moving in an upward direction. The second theme is playful and humorous in nature. Rob Goorhuis, who was born and bred in Amsterdan, may even have utilized memories of his own juvenile pranks in this second theme. The third theme, which is introduced by the cor anglais is melancholy and melodious. The elements mentioned above interchange in a thoroughly captivating manner, which ultimately results in an attractive composition fully capable of adding lustre to an anniversary. Excelsior werd door Rob Goorhuis gecomponeerd ter gelegenheid van het 75-jarig jubileum van muziekvereniging Jong Excelsior te Amsterdam. Excelsior is een doorgecomponeerde fantasie, bestaande uit met elkaar contrasterende themas. Het eerste (Excelsior)thema wordt gekenmerkt door hoekige stijgende figuren. Het tweede thema is speels en humoristisch van karakter. Rob Goorhuis, geboren en getogen Amsterdammer, verwerkte hierin wellicht herinneringen aan de kwajongensstreken uit zijn jeugd in Amsterdam. Het derde thema, ge?ntroduceerd door de Engelse hoorn, is melancholiek en zangerig. Genoemde elementen wisselen elkaar op boeiende wijze af, zodat een attractieve compositie is ontstaan. Concerto for Solo Marimba and Wind Orchestra. The four movements of Journey through a Japanese Landscape are based on a series of haiku which represents an emotional journey through the four seasons. The three haiku chosen for each of the seasons provide a setting and an event; thus, the gently undulating spring sea is the background for the free, improvisatory character of the skylark. The summer grasses have buried the glorious dreams of ancient warriors and after a violent storm, a distant memory of a march is heard. An autumnal fog envelops a colossal Buddha and a lonely watcher sounds one gong after another while a cricket acts as a grave keeper. Glass wind chimes introduce the frozen winter landscape. The march returns, then sleet and snow build to a big storm. Out of the silence that follows, echoes of the first movement suggest the return of spring and so, rebirth. (Grade 4) Duration: 23:00
