Enjoying his travels in Scotland, Marco Putz decided to compose a piece for wind band, based on Scottish folk songs. While in the airport at Glasgow, shortly before boarding his plane, Putz bought a collection of folk melodies from all over Scotland that had been arranged for flute. At first he harmonised several melodies in his own style, then he began to alter the resulting pieces (especially rhythmically). Eventually Putz added passages here and there and orchestrated the piece for wind band. Putz's resulting composition is an educational work that is both enjoyable and appealing to players of all ages, although it was written with young bands in mind. From the Highlands is part of a project to increase the repertoire available to youth and school bands, both in quantity and quality; an important personal and musical goal for the composer. This is Putz's third contribution of this sort to be added to the De Haske catalogue, following his successful Arrows of Lightning and Four Sketches for Band.Duration: 7:45

On the morning of April 19th 1995, in the single most violent act of domestic terrorism in the history of the United States, a bomb blast ripped through the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The explosion claimed 168 lives, including 19 children who attended the day care centre on the building's first floor.Across the street from the Murrah Building, an American Elm tree was severely damaged by the blast, but somehow managed to survive. Now known as The Survivor Tree, the elm has become an iconic symbol, one of faith, hope and perseverance in the face of tremendous adversity.Silent Stands the Elm is inspired by the symbolism and message of The Survivor Tree, and is dedicated to the victims and survivors of April 19th 1995.Duration: 5.00

William Blezard began writing Caramba! during a tour of New Zealand. Yet the musical basis of this work is about as far away from Kiwi culture as one can get. The word Caramba has several translations from the Spanish, including Dear Me!, or Goodness Me!, or perhaps more colloquially, Golly, or even Holy cow!. The entire work has an exotic feel to it that is so suggestive of things Spanish or Latin American. This is helped by the extensive use of percussion, and of course the brass is pure Latin American dance style. The demanding piano part is featured as almost a 'concertante'. In the Concert Band arrangement, the piano is highly desirable to replicate the original score, but the arrangement includes enough doubling and a short cut to make the piece entirely playable without the piano. Caramba! has all the hallmarks of a great piece of concert music that pleases as well as excites. For bands that want a challenge that is sure to bring an audience to its feet, Caramba! is the piece!

An ancient Japanese legend promises that folding 1,000 origami cranes will make your wish come true. If those cranes are folded in honour of someone, it shows that person is held in high esteem.The composition is an elegy that begins with a four-note theme. This motive is used in various ways throughout the piece as a unifying factor. Although its initial appearance is somewhat haunting, the motive becomes quite comforting by the end of the piece. References to cranes in flight are frequent and the use of pentatonic scales and tam-tam provides a nod to the music of Japan.Duration: 6.45

Lion City Festival was commissioned as one of the test pieces for the Singapore Youth Festival 2010, an annual event at which school ensembles from throughout Singapore can receive gold, silver or bronze awards for their performance. The English name for Singapore comes from Malay Singapura, which has Sanskrit roots meaning 'Lion City'. Lion City Festival is in the form of a quick march in ABA form. An opening fanfare leads to a perky march tune which is taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a legato trio section before the main theme returns in varied form. Gelobet seist du Jesu Christ (We Praise You Jesus Christ) is an old Christmas hymn dating from the 16th century, which can still be found in many hymnbooks today. John Blanken has created a varied and imaginative arrangement on four verses of the hymn. After the introduction, derived from the opening notes, the hymn is first accompanied by an agile harmonisation. Next, we hear the chorale in a four-part setting with a percussion accompaniment. Then follows a short prologue to the third verse and finally its time for fireworks as the arrangement takes a stylistic leap in time with the festive prelude to the fourth and last verse.Duration: 4:00
