£57.50Hambone - Libby Larsen
Libby Larsen used three inspirations from her life to write Hambone. First, she was inspired by early rock 'n roll rhythms, particularly those written by Bo Diddley, from her high school days when she had her own rock band. The second inspiration is the African-American tradition of hamboning - clapping and slapping to create fun, new rhythms, and finally the melodies of the traditional cakewalk, reminiscent of Debussy's Golliwog's Cakewalk. The curriculum explores all three of these inspirations with various musical and visual examples, and explains African American oral traditions, linking this piece to places all over the world, from Ghana and the Ivory Coast to Paris, France. Letter from Sado is an exciting piece for young band designed to draw out the musicality in young players. With a focus on interpretation of an ancient haiku poem with natural imagery, performers are invited to become decision makers about specific sections in the music. Composer Alex Shapiro's piece Paper Cut is reminiscent of a movie soundtrack to which the musicians can imagine their own dramatic scene. Paper Cut is written to make the players themselves part of the action with choreographed maneuvers that look as compelling as they sound. In fact, the band members don't even play their instruments until halfway into the piece - instead they play paper along with a prerecorded track! The unusual element of paper and the myriad sounds that can emerge from something so simple offers a fresh view of what music-making can be and opens everyone's ears to the sonic possibilities found among everyday objects. Although Paper Cut was composed with middle schoolers in mind, it's also suited to more advanced musicians, since the paper techniques and the skill of playing against a prerecorded track are interesting for all ages. To perform the piece, you'll need an audio system capable of playing the prerecorded audio tracks from a laptop computer via a small digital audio interface connected to an audio mixer. Score and parts.Born in Richmond Hill, New York, on 10 December 1913, Morton Gould was recognised early on as a child prodigy with theability to improvise and compose. At the age of six he had his first composition published. He studied at the Institute of Musical Art (now the Juilliard School), but his most important teachers were Abby Whiteside (Piano) andVincent Jones (composition).Gould enjoyed an illustrious career. In addition to gaining a Pulitzer Prize for 'Stringmusic', he was Musical America's 1994 Composer-of-the-Year and recieved a Kennedy Center Honor inrecognition of lifetime contributions to American culture.A long-time member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, Gould was elected president of ASCAP in 1986, a post he held until 1994.In 1986 he was elected to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. He also served on the board of the American Symphony Orchestra League and on the National Endowment for the Arts music panel.

£110.00Down by the Riverside (Concert Band with opt. Choir - Score and Parts) - Rutter, John - Noble, Paul
Down by the riverside is a spiritual that was sung by slaves in the South as a work song. It dates back to before the American Civil War. John Rutter's lively arrangement of this barnstorming American folk-song builds up from a quiet opening to a triumphant conclusion. This arrangement is a faithful adaptation of the original orchestration for chorus and orchestra, but it is arranged so that it may be performed by band alone. The style is an authentic toe-tapping early jazz creation that relates to the 'jitterbug' era, and the band arrangement is complete with an optional jazz clarinet solo as well as a rousing chorus by the sax section. The piano part is cued if needed. This is a perfect opportunity to get the entire band 'swinging', and could even entice a 'One mo' time!' finale.

£110.00Caramba! (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Blezard, William - Noble, Paul
William Blezard began writing Caramba! during a tour of New Zealand. Yet the musical basis of this work is about as far away from Kiwi culture as one can get. The word Caramba has several translations from the Spanish, including Dear Me!, or Goodness Me!, or perhaps more colloquially, Golly, or even Holy cow!. The entire work has an exotic feel to it that is so suggestive of things Spanish or Latin American. This is helped by the extensive use of percussion, and of course the brass is pure Latin American dance style. The demanding piano part is featured as almost a 'concertante'. In the Concert Band arrangement, the piano is highly desirable to replicate the original score, but the arrangement includes enough doubling and a short cut to make the piece entirely playable without the piano. Caramba! has all the hallmarks of a great piece of concert music that pleases as well as excites. For bands that want a challenge that is sure to bring an audience to its feet, Caramba! is the piece!

Virginia Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
This expressive piece depicts three periods that play an important role in the history of the American state of Virginia, the colonization, slavery, and the American Civil War. The first movement describes the adventures and hardships of the first colonists through lively American sounding themes.The expressive slow movement, in which a melancholic minor theme forms the starting point, depicts, with clever use of blues elements, the oppressed slaves on the tobacco plantation. This is followed by a illustration of the Civil War, heralded by ceremonial figures from the brass section.
