The Odyssey was written by Homer about 2700 years ago and tells of the adventures of the Greek hero Odysseus during his harrowing return trip home after fighting the Trojan Wars. This work is suggestive of his dramatic encounter with the sirens, famous for luring sailors to their death with their beguiling wind-like song. In this descriptive piece you can hear the wind-song becoming evermore insistent, the rocking of the ship, Odysseus' screams, and finally the sirens plunging to their death as they fail in their attempt to lure Odysseus. This expressive piece depicts three periods that play an important role in the history of the American state of Virginia, the colonization, slavery, and the American Civil War. The first movement describes the adventures and hardships of the first colonists through lively American sounding themes.The expressive slow movement, in which a melancholic minor theme forms the starting point, depicts, with clever use of blues elements, the oppressed slaves on the tobacco plantation. This is followed by a illustration of the Civil War, heralded by ceremonial figures from the brass section. The work is brought to a close with a slow but optimistic theme heralding hope for the future.

This work strives to capture the beauty of Apple Island, a small island located in the centre of Orchard Lake in Michigan, and the surrounding area. It also pays homage to the colourful Native American leader Chief Pontiac who lived and is buried on the island. The main theme, which appears throughout the work, is based on an original Native American chant that is still used today in their sacred religious ceremonies.Duration: 6.00

Caprice for Trumpet and Band was written in 1994. It was commissioned by Robert E Foster, Conductor of the University of Kansas Symphonic Band. The premier performance was presented on March, 9 1995 in Lawrence, Kansas at the 61st annual conference of the American Bandmasters Association. The soloist was William Campbell, Professor of Trumpet at The University of Kansas. It was the intent of Robert Foster and the composer to produce a work which was challenging for a professional trumpet player yet also playable by an outstanding college student. The piece consist of two contrasting themes in the allegro section followed by a lyrical middle section. Then the first two themes return in altered fashion.Duration: 7:30 American Grade 5

Written for an icon in the band world, "Favor And Treasure" honors Col. John Bourgeois, Director Emeritus of the United States Marine Band, past president of the American Bandmasters Association, president of the John Philip Sousa Foundation, American vice president of the International Military Music Society, mentor and friend. "Favor And Treasure" is based on "John's Theme," a bold, original theme conveying inspirational imagery of excellence, artistry and duty congruous with Col. Bourgeois' distinguished career at the helm of the band to which President Thomas Jefferson gave the title "The President's Own." To honor Bourgeois' affinity for Cajun folk music, the old Cajun waltz, "J'ai Passe Devant Ta Porte" is also used, most prominently in the quasi-zydeco section of the work. Musicians and audience members of all ages will be assuredly affected by the spirit and essence of this extraordinary composition.
