The collected letters of U.S. Grant reveal much information about the thoughts and emotions he was experiencing around the events of the Civil War. Some of the letters are tenderhearted, written in moments of sentimental passion; others are very clear and emphatic statements that he will do whatever it takes to bring the war to a close. The many moods and emotions expressed in his correspondence are reflected in the various sections of this powerful and moving work. An outstanding concert work, it is also appropriate for Civil War or patriotic commemorative ceremonies.

Paul Yoder is one of the big names in the history of American wind band music. He was a pioneer in teaching the developing youth bands in the USA and by spreading the modern wind band music repertoire throughout Japan. He wrote over 200 works for symphonic band. 'Dutch Treat' was composed in the early seventies and immediately published in 1971 by Molenaar, a personal friend of Paul Yoder. It is an original arrangement of a traditional tune.

The American composer John Tatgenhorst (East Liverpool, Ohio, 1938) started composing works for school bands. Among his numerous band compositions the overture 'Tanglewood' was very successsful. The work 'Above and Beyond' is a spectacular composition for symphonic band, whose ambition matches its title. There is an extended percussion part requiring six players and there are also parts for piano, harp and violoncello. It was commissioned by the United States Air Force Band, Washington and its conductor Alan Bonner.

The American composer Abe Holzman (New-York, 1874 - East Orange, New Jersey, 1939) worked the greater part of his life as composer and arranger for several music publishing firms. His famous march 'Blaze away' (1901) was inspired by the words of an officer during a naval battle of the Spanish-American War. In 1898 Captain Gridley ordered to open fire against the Spanish fleet in the Bay of Manila with the words 'Well boys let's blaze away!'. This march became extremely popular in the 20th century, also in Europe. Willy Hautvast adapted it to the contemporary European wind band.
