The march Defenders Day is named for the legal holiday in Maryland which commemorates the successful defense of the city of Baltimore on September 12, 1814 from an invading British force during the War of 1812. This event would lead to the writing of the United States of America's national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." New York - Nigel Hess
New York - or to be more precise, Manhattan. For anyone who is familiar with this bizarre and wonderful city, here is a 'picture' that needs no explanation. For those not yet hooked this is a foretaste of things to come! This piece forms the final movement of 'East Coast Pictures', commissioned by the British Youth Wind Orchestra with funds from the National Westminster Bank plc. It is a suite of three short 'pictures' that were inspired by several visits to a small part of the American East Coast, an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people.

Shelter Island - Nigel Hess
Shelter Island is the first movement of East Coast Pictures. It is a depiction of the Shelter Island itself, a few hours drive east of New York. In the summer it becomes a crowded tourist trap; but in the winter it is gloriously deserted and bravely faces the onslaught of the turbulent Atlantic, shrouded in sea mists and driving rain. This 'picture' is a fond memory of a winter weekend on Shelter Island. East Coast Pictures was commissioned by the British Youth Wind Orchestra with funds from the National Westminster Bank plc. Down by the riverside is a spiritual that was sung by slaves in the South as a work song. It dates back to before the American Civil War. John Rutter's lively arrangement of this barnstorming American folk-song builds up from a quiet opening to a triumphant conclusion. This arrangement is a faithful adaptation of the original orchestration for chorus and orchestra, but it is arranged so that it may be performed by band alone. The style is an authentic toe-tapping early jazz creation that relates to the 'jitterbug' era, and the band arrangement is complete with an optional jazz clarinet solo as well as a rousing chorus by the sax section. The piano part is cued if needed. This is a perfect opportunity to get the entire band 'swinging', and could even entice a 'One mo' time!' finale.

£110.00Caramba! (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Blezard, William - Noble, Paul
William Blezard began writing Caramba! during a tour of New Zealand. Yet the musical basis of this work is about as far away from Kiwi culture as one can get. The word Caramba has several translations from the Spanish, including Dear Me!, or Goodness Me!, or perhaps more colloquially, Golly, or even Holy cow!. The entire work has an exotic feel to it that is so suggestive of things Spanish or Latin American. This is helped by the extensive use of percussion, and of course the brass is pure Latin American dance style. The demanding piano part is featured as almost a 'concertante'. In the Concert Band arrangement, the piano is highly desirable to replicate the original score, but the arrangement includes enough doubling and a short cut to make the piece entirely playable without the piano. Caramba! has all the hallmarks of a great piece of concert music that pleases as well as excites. For bands that want a challenge that is sure to bring an audience to its feet, Caramba! is the piece!

This expressive piece depicts three periods that play an important role in the history of the American state of Virginia, the colonization, slavery, and the American Civil War. The first movement describes the adventures and hardships of the first colonists through lively American sounding themes. The expressive slow movement, in which a melancholic minor theme forms the starting point, depicts, with clever use of blues elements, the oppressed slaves on the tobacco plantation. This is followed by a illustration of the Civil War, heralded by ceremonial figures from the brass section.
