The Odyssey was written by Homer about 2700 years ago and tells of the adventures of the Greek hero Odysseus during his harrowing return trip home after fighting the Trojan Wars. John Barnes Chance composed his landmark work for band, Incantation and Dance, in 1960 while in residence at the high school in Greensboro, North Carolina. Commissioned by the Union County (NC) Honor Band, Prelude and Pursuit paystribute to this important composition and its North Carolina connection. A haunting chant-like theme played by the clarinets sets the tone for the slow section. Similar to Chance's work, the fast section begins with percussioninstruments introducing thematic elements later picked up and developed by the winds. Intensifying rhythmic elements, as well as carefully controlled random playing effects, contribute to an overall sense of excitement andanticipation. Themes are woven throughout various sections of the band before the opening chant motif makes a brief dramatic appearance near the end. A great teaching tool for young players, Prelude and Pursuit also provides arewarding performance experience. Dur: 4:50

Percy Grainger's extraordinary scoring skills permeate this classic, carefree work for symphonic band. Children's March: Over the Hills and Far Away, originally a piano solo, was orchestrated by the composer while he was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Artillery Band. It includes two unusual scoring elements for the time - a prominent part for piano (cued in the winds), and brief four-part vocal interludes to be sung by members of the band (or a small chorus ad lib). Grainger believed that the greatest expressivity could be found in the lower instruments of the band (particularly the lower woodwinds), and Children's March includes a liberal and highly specialized use of the bassoons, English horn, bass clarinet and low saxophones. The march was first performed by the renowned Goldman Band in 1919, and was recorded in its original form by the same band with the composer conducting. (Full set includes a vocal score.)

Moving Heaven and Earth consists of a theme and 4 variations; although the theme is original it contains a phrase heavily influenced by a 14-bar passage from the Libera Me in Faur's Requiem. It is a sequence that the composer finds harmonically compelling and, although it is never quoted directly, it appears in altered form in the theme and each of the variations. In the original, the passage is set to the words: Quando cli movendi sunt et terra (When the heavens and the earth shall be moved) which gave inspiration for the title.

Ravel's ballet, Daphnis and Chlo, was commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev and premiered with the Ballets Russes in Paris in 1912. The ballet is now rarely performed, but its Suite No. 2 remains popular. It consists of three movements, Lever du jour, Pantomime and Danse gnrale, that are played without interruption. Tohru Takahashi makes no compromises in his transcription, which calls for at least 60 musicians and an optional mixed chorus!

This arrangement for trombone section and band combines two well-known wartime songs The Quartermaster's Store and Bless 'em all to give the trombone section a thorough workout as well as a lot of fun. The Quartermaster's Store is a traditional song from England. The origins of both tune and words are uncertain and may actually date back as far as the English Civil War. The origins of Bless 'em All are also unclear. The words have been credited to Fred Godfrey in 1917 set to music composed by Robert Kewley but earlier versions of the song may have been in existence among British military personnel in the 1880s in India. It was first recorded by George Formby Jr in 1940 and became a patriotic song.Duration: 2.45
