Pilgrims' Swing (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Lloyd, Graham
The Andante from the first movement of Mendelssohn's Italian Symphony (often nicknamed Pilgrims' March) contains the most beautifully haunting melody supported by the simplest of bass lines and counterpoint figures. As a young musician, Graham Lloyd was so fascinated by this music he bought the orchestral score to study the notes, which at the time made little sense to him. However, he did notice that the bass line was similar to a "walking bass" line in a standard swing tune.In this composition Graham Lloyd uses Mendelssohn's original bass line, melodic line and counterpoint figures but gives them a swing feel. Who knows, maybe if Mendelssohn had been born a hundred years later, he could have become one of our big band leaders!Duration: 5:15

Hawkeye Festival Overture begins with a bright opening fanfare which leads to a rhythmic Allegro section. An Andante section in 3/4 time features a lyric trumpet solo and numerous harmonic suspensions. A driving percussion interlude in 5/4 with a gradual pyramid that builds in the winds leads to a return of the Allegro. The work ends with a powerful re-statement of the syncopated 5/4 motives and finishes with a flourish. This very appealing work is well-suited for developing concert bands and should provide excellent opportunities for studies in general musicianship, intonation and rhythmic precision. Duration: 4.45

As the title suggests, this piece comprises a set of variations on an original chorale,which is presented in the opening bars.The chorale uses the dark middle and lower sections of the band and is extended with minor variations until a pause leads to the first real variation, marked Vivo. This is in the form of a moto perpetuo. The second variation is a beautiful Andante introduced by a solo clarinet. Following a full band climax the final variation opens with quiet, nervous energy until its main theme is introduced.The chorale makes a brief appearance until the main theme reappears. This leads to a triumphant final augmented statement of the chorale theme, decorated by the florid clarinet theme in the upper woodwinds. A dazzling concert work.Duration: 14:00

A transition (Andante) quickly builds tension and leads to a furious Vivace section, featuring changing meters, rapid scale work, and development of the principal motive. To A New Dawn was commissioned by the United States Continental Army Band - Captain Timothy J. Holtan, Commander and Conductor.The brief was for a piece to celebrate the 3rd Millennium and it was the composer's aim to provide a work which, as well as looking forward to the challenges of the new century, also contained moments of reflection about the last one.After a bright introduction featuring the trumpets a perky theme, passing quickly through several keys, appears on the woodwinds. A solo trumpet takes up a new theme over bubbling quavers (eighth notes) and this leads to a rhythmic figure on low clarinets, followed by the upper woodwinds. A brass interlude follows and, after a short bridge passage, an oboe takes up a contrasting legato tune that builds to a climax.An andante section follows with solos for horn and flugel horn (or trumpet) and a florid flute cadenza. A passionate climax leads back to the faster music and, eventually, to a full recapitulation, revisiting the earlier material before a lively coda close the work as it began.Duration: 9:40
