Four Pictures - Árpád Balázs
The teachers under whom rpd Balzs (b.1937) studied composition - Ferenc Farkas, Aram Khachaturian and Goffredo Petrassi - each independently formed the opinion that with his lyrical gift rpd Balzs's true creative field would be that of choral music and wind ensembles. Their early predictions are borne out by the roughly two hundred and fifty works for choir and almost twenty for wind orchestra that the composer has since produced. It is interesting that in the suite entitled Ngy kp (Four pictures) the stylistic features of these two related musical fields are united. In it the wind instruments sing! It was not by chance that the expansive second movement was given the title Cantilena, while the slightly livelier but just as lyrical third movement was entitled Arietta. The opening movement of the work is a stridently jolly, energetic Indul (March), but not one of the rigidly military kind: the 6/8 rhythm contributes to its light-hearted character. This music is avowedly akin to the ballet music of Prokofiev. This choice series of four character pieces is crowned by Jtk (Play) in which conveying the effect of the mixture of lines moving in parallel and then colliding with each other may be more technically demanding, but is well worth the effort! Courtly Dance and Procession - Brian Balmages
You'll be surprised to know that this great sounding work uses only six notes in all instruments, with the exception of the clarinets, which use a low written B to involve the right hand. The piece has a Renaissance quality to it and includes a middle processional theme (at the same tempo) to work on legato playing. Optional parts are included for clarinet 2 and trumpet 2. There is something for everyone in this dynamic addition to the repertoire!

Vikings Victorious Concert March - Chris Sharp
A concert march in the classic tradition, this piece is ideal for your festival program. Written in the key of E=, the difficult key change at the trio is avoided by a modulation to B=, instead of the traditional A=. The D.S. al fine helps this piece come together with minimum rehearsal time and maximum result. Consider even using the opening section as a school fight song! (1:50)

Olympia - Brian Balmages
This fanfare captures the spirit of Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. The Games began in 776 B.C. in honor of Zeus. Since then, they have become the central location for heroes and champions to compete for the highest honors in the world. This work also serves as a reminder that heroes are all around us - in teachers who stay after school to help students, in parents who strive to give their children the best possible lives, and most of all in students themselves, the young champions of our world who see nothing between them and their dreams. The mallet part calls for multiple sets of bells (or other metallic instruments such as the vibraphone). Certainly, two to three players can really make this an effective part. There are two Percussion 1 parts included: a normal part and an advanced part. The level of the snare drummer will determine which part should be used. However, both parts may be used simultaneously if percussionists are available.

Noel
Noel" is based on the famous English Carol "The First Noel". The age of this song is not clear. Some scientists argue that tis song is from early thirteenth century, others say that it's from the sixteenth century. The first publication was in 'Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern', compiled by William B. Sandys. (London, 1833).The exact origin is unknown. By Norman influences on the text, with the result that the spelling of the song is not certified (Noel, Nowell), an individual will sometimes claim that France is the cradle of this song, but in general assumes that "the First Noel 'for the first time somewhere in England sung.

Eternal Vigilance (The Long Brave Line) - Robert Jager
The result of a collaborative commission by the U.S. Air Force Academy Band, the U.S. Coast Guard Band, the U.S. Military Academy Band and the U.S. Naval Academy Band, this major work for band takes its title from a quote attributed to Thomas Jefferson, Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty, and a variation of the West Point motto, The Long Gray Line. Opening with a tribute to those who have gone before in service to our country, a solemn, noble theme is presented that reappears near the end of the composition. The main body of the work is a series of march-like themes and idiomatic fragments culminating in a glorious full-band fanfare. Following a restatement of the noble theme, a stirring coda brings the music to a climactic close. Dur: 8:30 (Grade 5) (E.B. Marks)
