£59.00Fanfare for Hope - A. Eric Heukeshoven
Fanfare for Hope was commissioned in honor of the inauguration of Father James P. Burns, the 14th President of Saint Mary's University of Minnesota. The fanfare is based on the hymn tune Melita, more commonly known as the Navy Hymn, Eternal Father, Strong to Save, with the text "My hope is built on nothing less ..." serving as the inspiration for the piece. The opening brass fanfare features the uplifting first notes of the tune transitioning into a legato treatment for the woodwinds and horns. The theme builds as the brass and percussion eventually return leading back to the original fanfare. The music ends triumphantly with the entire ensemble joining in celebration.

These days, many concert bands celebrate their centenary - this provided a good reason to compose the Centennial Celebration. This work has a festive, harmonious and optimistic vibe. A joyful introduction is followed by a lyrical passage with an enticing melody, after which the same theme can be heard in a pop style variation. Next is a kind of trio with a melody that will linger in your mind. Lively sounds bring us back to the lyrical main theme once more, but this time exuberant, like a pop ballad. Finally, we hear the festive sounds of the introduction again, now as a lustrous conclusion.

The Cherry Tree is a beautiful and lyrical folk song dating back as early as the 15th century in the English Midlands. Having traveled all around western Europe, this folk tune eventually found its way to America, gaining popularity in the South in early 1900s and again in the 1960s. This setting, by composer Brian Beck, captures the beauty and simplicity of the original ballad while encouraging musical expression and smooth phrasing. This distinctive work by Michael Oare is based on two Italian dance forms dating back to the Baroque period. Siciliano opens with a delicate 6/8 melody in the flutes which is developed and passed around to various sections of the band. In contrast, Tarantella is a brash and uptempo dance featuring a rhythmic pulse accompanying the flowing melodic lines. Quite a nice pairing of tunes with historical importance.

Salutation was commissioned by Japanese conductor and broadcaster, Yutaka Nishida, a dear friend of the composer Philip Sparke. Salutation follows fairly conventional march form. A short fanfare introduces the main theme, played by clarinets and saxophones. A bridge passage, mainly in the brass, heralds a change of key and a legato second subject, again played initially by the clarinets, which leads to the conventional trio theme, which is then repeated by the full band. Sections of the second subject lead back to the home key and a return of the main theme, embellished with woodwinds.

The Castle of Allymes, "castrum Alemorum", located on a hill in the centre of the seigneury of Allymes (France) is an historic castle dating back to the fourteenth century, rebuilt in the sixteenth century and restored in the nineteenth. This piece evokes an image of the castle, its beautiful location within the surrounding landscape and its importance for the rural district of Ambrieu-en-Bugey. Combining beautiful melodies with rhythmical sections and modern sounds with passages in a renaissance style, this work of Jacob de Haan is an impressive musical challenge that is both fun to play as well as appealing for your audience: as you listen you can almost see the castlebefore your eyes.

White Eagle Overture - Steve Hodges
With a dramatic introduction and a beautiful Andante section, this overture is excellent for concert or contest use. The main theme alternates effectively from major to minor with active accompaniment patterns. The contrasting middle section is flowing and reflective before transitioning back to the drama of the main theme and the exciting conclusion. Each section of the young band will enjoy playing the melodies and rhythmic accompaniments of this dynamic composition.
