The Catskills forms the second movement of East Coast Pictures, commissioned by the British Youth Wind Orchestra with funds from the National Westminster Bank plc. It is a suite of three short 'pictures' that were inspired by several visits to a small part of the American East Coast, an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people.

VIEW SCORE PDF A Coventry Rhapsody is based on The Coventry Carol, which dates back to the 16th century and is one of three songs from a nativity play entitled Pageant of the Shearman and Tailors which was traditionally performed in Coventry. The carol itself depicts the Massacre of the Innocents in the nativity narrative from the Gospel of Matthew, in which King Herod, orders the execution of all baby boys under the age of two in the vicinity of Bethlehem. Snippets of the carol can be heard throughout the work in different guises. It is not until the final section that we hear the carol in all its glory. The first movement, "The New Frontier" is a bold and majestic section containing the patented Swearingen melodic themes which have made his music so popular. Although the roots of this British folksong date back to the 18th century, the first publication of the melody was in the late 1850's in the collection "National English Airs". Early One Morning is the story of a young woman misused by her lover, as overheard by the singer. In the mid-1930's the tune was adapted as a military slow march called "The Globe and Laurel" for the Royal Marines band. This arrangement focuses on the lyricism of the original with just a hint of its later military associations. Only the 1st clarinets cross the break. 1st trumpet's highest note is F.

The English folk group 'Steeleye Span' featuring female lead singer Maddy Prior had a hit with this song in the seventies. Peter Martin made a scintillating arrangement for wind-band. By the use of fourths and thirds in the melody the composer harks back to the period from which the song originated (The Middle Ages)

This exciting overture opens with a fanfare section that emphasizes the brass and is active rhythmically as well as harmonically. A strong, full sound will result from the richly scored chromatic parallel triads. For musicalcontrast, the middle section is quasi-rubato and very lyrical, relying mainly on the woodwinds with low brass added later. The transition back to the original rhythmic fanfare is smoothly written and effectively brings the work toa close. This overture is a fine choice for concert, contest and festival. (Grade 3)
