Written as a memorial for a middle school band student, this sensitive and moving work opens with a chorale played by off-stage brass. A flowing melody stated in the low register is then developed before leading to a brief fanfare-like affirmation. The Korean folk song "You and I" is briefly quoted before returning to the off-stage brass and calm closing passage. A beautifully scored lyric piece for band. Beginning with a strong introduction by the trumpets, this arrangement provides three effective settings of America. The first two settings are at a moderate march tempo in 4/4 time featuring the clarinets and trumpets, followed by a lush presentation by the low brass and woodwinds. A lively flute countermelody accompanies the first setting. The final presentation begins with a brass chorale in the traditional 3/4 meter that leads to a stirring conclusion featuring a flowing woodwind countermelody. A short rallentando leads to a spirited return of the original march countermelody that brings the piece to an exciting conclusion. Duration: 2.30

Salute to a Hero was composed to honour the work of a truly deserving musician, teacher, and conductor. It opens with a noble brass fanfare with woodwind ornamentation. A lyrical middle section follows, providing a beautiful and peaceful contrast to the powerful sound of the brass section. In 2007 Philip Sparke was appointed composer-in-residence to Monmouth School, situated on the Welsh/English border. The school, which has a venerable history dating back to 1614, has a thriving music department which boasts two concert bands, in co-operation with the nearby Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls, and a brass band.This exciting and innovative appointment involved three visits by the composer during the year as well as the commissioning of a new piece for each of the bands, all of which were premiered in a concert at the end of the year.Almshouse Street Blues was written for the brass band, whose members were allowed to vote for which type of piece they would get! Monmouth School is based in Almshouse Street and the town has a thriving summer festival which, alongside blues bands, features a wide variety of music including jazz, soul, rock and bangra.Duration: 4.45

Following an effective modulation, the piece finishes with a powerful restatement of the opening theme with woodwind countermelodies complementing the strong brass and percussion. Inspired by the majestic Alaskan landscape, Glacier Bay provides plenty of opportunities for dynamic and expressive playing by the young musicians. Following a brief introduction, the main theme is presented first by the trumpets and then by the low brass and trumpets in a lively and flowing manner. The active syncopated accompaniment patterns in the low brass and woodwinds provide an effective contrast to the melody. The B section of the piece moves smoothly into a stately, alla breve tempo with a clarinet choir making the first presentation of the melody. Following a very peaceful conclusion to the B section, an abbreviated restatement of the A section melody leads to the dynamic ending. Duration: 3.30
