Based on the shaped note melody Saints Bound for Heaven, Jubilee by James Curnow captures a feeling of joyful celebration through a series of unique and skilfully adapted variations. The opening strains are actually fragments of the first variation and occur before the main tune is introduced by low brass and woodwinds. The second variation features a euphonium solo and builds to a glorious climax with the full ensemble. The final variation is joyful and filled with energy, using flourishes in the woodwinds and fanfares in the brass for a grand conclusion to this marvellous work.Duration: 5:30

The composer writes:On March 11th 2011 a massive 9.0- magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of north-eastern Japan. I'm writing these programme notes barely a week later and the death toll caused by the quake and resulting tsunami already exceeds 6000, with thousands of people still unaccounted for. I have many friends associated with many bands throughout Japan and one of these, Yutaka Nishida, suggested I write a piece to raise money to help those affected by the disaster. I was immediately attracted by the idea and have arranged Cantilena (a brass band piece recently commissioned by the Grenland International Brass Festival, Norway) for wind band, giving it a new title to honour my friends in the Land of the Rising Sun. I will be donating royalties from this piece to the Japanese Red Cross Society Emergency Relief Fund and am delighted to say that my distributors, De Haske, who will generously also donate all net profits from sales of this piece, have pledged a substantial advance payment to the Red Cross so that what little help this project generates can be immediate. It is my sincere wish that this 'Band Aid' project will allow wind bands around the world support the people of Japan, where bands are a way of life for many, in this difficult time.- Philip SparkeDuration: 4:30

This energetic overture opens strongly with the low brass presenting a melodic arpeggio motive that recurs throughout the A section of the piece. Beginning with a strong introduction by the trumpets, this arrangement provides three effective settings of America. The first two settings are at a moderate march tempo in 4/4 time featuring the clarinets and trumpets, followed by a lush presentation by the low brass and woodwinds. A lively flute countermelody accompanies the first setting. The final presentation begins with a brass chorale in the traditional 3/4 meter that leads to a stirring conclusion featuring a flowing woodwind countermelody. A short rallentando leads to a spirited return of the original march countermelody that brings the piece to an exciting conclusion. Duration: 2.30

Salute to a Hero was composed to honour the work of a truly deserving musician, teacher, and conductor. It opens with a noble brass fanfare with woodwind ornamentation. A lyrical middle section follows, providing a beautiful and peaceful contrast to the powerful sound of the brass section. In 2007 Philip Sparke was appointed composer-in-residence to Monmouth School, situated on the Welsh/English border. The school, which has a venerable history dating back to 1614, has a thriving music department which boasts two concert bands, in co-operation with the nearby Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls, and a brass band.This exciting and innovative appointment involved three visits by the composer during the year as well as the commissioning of a new piece for each of the bands, all of which were premiered in a concert at the end of the year.Almshouse Street Blues was written for the brass band, whose members were allowed to vote for which type of piece they would get! Following an effective modulation, the piece finishes with a powerful restatement of the opening theme with woodwind countermelodies complementing the strong brass and percussion. Johnson, Stuart has arranged and adapted the first movement of this much loved Mozart piano sonata (KV 282) to create a delightful and welcome addition to the clarinet repertoire. The accompaniment is lightly scored for small wind band. Primarily this is to create a classical feel which reflects the style of the music. However, larger bands may wish to place the piece strategically in the program to give the heavy brass a rest. To this end, directors may also prefer to use single players on the brass and saxophone parts which would also help to give and orchestral feel to the performance.
