The Art of Expressive Playing for Winds and Percussion
While there are no absolute rules concerning expressive playing and phrasing, this innovative series clearly lays out basic concepts that help players become good musicians. The series focuses on the natural relationship between meter, rhythm, contour, tonality, style and historical period, and guides the player to a greater understanding of factors that can improve performance. This one of a kind text, written for teachers, woodwind, brass and percussion players, will help stimulate and cultivate more musical playing by individual musicians and by ensembles as a whole.

Procession of the Regal Scepter - Arthur J Michaels
Programme notes from the composer, Arthur J Michaels:"Procession of the Regal Scepter," (Grade II level), captures the regal splendor and majestic grandeur of processions, inaugurations, coronations and other stately ceremonies past and present, here and abroad. The piece begins with dignified legato phrases. A middle section features the brass instruments in a more punched, staccato style, followed by the woodwinds' antiphonal response. The piece then restates both the legato phrases of the beginning and the antiphonal staccato portions, and the piece ends in a stirring finish."Procession of the Regal Scepter" is within reach of less experienced bands yet suitable for more experienced groups. Ample doubling and cues let bands with limited or uneven perform the piece successfully. The piece's plentiful cuing allows for great performance flexibility. For this reason, "Procession of the Regal Scepter" works well in any concert program.

Der Aufstand - Gavin Higgins
Der Aufstand (German for 'riot') is not a descriptive work, nor is it solely based on the riots of 2011. It does, however, draw on the idea of opposing forces and escalating anger. The work falls into two contrasting sections that are linked by a series of repeated, 'screaming' chords. A slow build drives the first section from a single pitch to a blazing orchestral tutti. The second section is a fast and wild series of fanfares and driving rhythms that ultimately cannot be sustained. In many ways this mirrors the first. Both sections open on single tones (Bb and E) and grow to a climax of brass and hammered chords. The first performance took place on the last day of the 2012 Olympic Games. Der Aufstand is a noisy antithesis to the celebratory fanfare.Wind Band Grade: 6 (Professional and elite student and 'national' bands)Duration: 10 minutes

Cryptogram - Kit Turnbull
Cryptogram (krip-to-gram): anything written in cipher. Cipher (si'fer): a secret code.Commissioned for the 50th Birthday of Paul Patterson, the composer has taken the letters P, A, U and L and adapted their Morse Code dots and dashes as a basis for the piece. Combinations of rich brass writing, juxtaposed with florid upper wind writing, provides a stimulating piece for an intermediate level band. The finale to the work superimposes both elements for a grand ending.
