A strong sense of suspense is established at the very outset, permeating the musical fabric throughout the entire piece to create a very effective, attention-grabbing concert opener. An unsettled and relentless rhythmic pulse drives the work forward, provided at various times by woodwinds, brass, and percussion, keeping the listener on edge until they all come together for the intense and emphatic finish.

This pulsating composition transforms the various attributes of electricity into musical sounds. Reverberating ostinatos in the bass line represent crackling bursts of current while intricate moving lines of woodwinds and mallet percussion reflect the motion of electrons darting about. Adding to the overall effect are sounds of intense lightning strikes provided by thick and explosive low brass chords while the percussion section generates electrical energy sounds throughout.

The vision of an epic battle between these great monsters is depicted, replete with percussive sounds of impact as they collide with one another while winds and brass create melodic lines of unrelenting flame and fury.

The action then subsides into a triumphant flourish that ends the piece with the assertive and uncompromising sounds of victory.

In 1884, a locomotive tossed a spark that stated a fire that reduced the town of Milton, Pennsylvania to ashes. A majestic fanfare depicts the vibrant town with train whistles in the flutes, train bells in the chimes, whirling engines in the brass, and telegraphs in woodwinds and mallets. Growing dissonances depict the fierce firestorm that abruptly dissolves into a solemn oboe solo of the towns sadness, while paper bags and plastic water bottles represent the smoldering fire. The music then turns from sorrow to hope as small sections of the schools alma mater embed the message of hope and optimism before the rousing and triumphant coda.

"Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth..." Inspired by the poem "High Flight" this work takes musical flight with sweeping woodwinds and mallets soaring above the cinematic melodic statement by brass. The highly rhythmic melody soars upward to the middle, lyrical section which seems to float effortlessly through the upper reaches of the sky. As the sustained expressive melody reaches it's musical apex it reunites with the opening material to finish with a swift and breathtaking finish.
