To A New Dawn was commissioned by the United States Continental Army Band - Captain Timothy J. Holtan, Commander and Conductor.The brief was for a piece to celebrate the 3rd Millennium and it was the composer's aim to provide a work which, as well as looking forward to the challenges of the new century, also contained moments of reflection about the last one.After a bright introduction featuring the trumpets a perky theme, passing quickly through several keys, appears on the woodwinds. A solo trumpet takes up a new theme over bubbling quavers (eighth notes) and this leads to a rhythmic figure on low clarinets, followed by the upper woodwinds. A brass interlude follows and, after ashort bridge passage, an oboe takes up a contrasting legato tune that builds to a climax.An andante section follows with solos for horn and flugel horn (or trumpet) and a florid flute cadenza. A passionate climax leads back to the faster music and, eventually, to a full recapitulation, revisiting the earlier material before a lively coda close the work as it began.

Bite the Bullet by Mexican-American composer Jorge Machain was named 2019-2020 winner of acclaimed "The American Prize" for music, in addition to being a finalist in the 2018 NBA Revelli competition. The work was inspired by a painting by Venetian artist, Carlo Marchiori, which depicts two 'Pulcinelli' (Venetian clowns) engaged in a gun battle. As the bullets meet in the middle of the scene, a colorful and vibrant cloudburst is created. Using a unique sonic color scheme, the brass and percussion portray the gunshots, while the woodwind flourishes emulate the painter's vibrant brush strokes.Commissined and recorded by the UNLV Wind Orchestra Thomas G. The Baroque is a period of frills and ornaments, wether in architecture, painting or music. An easy melody passes through a variety of arrangements. From brass quintet and different tutti parts, all the sections are in action. Fortified by a drum set and an (optional) electric bass, the piece is given a modern touch and becomes more acceptable to the audience. A follow-up to "Rondo Romantica", this piece was composed in December 1997.

Swingin' Kilts - John Blanken
John Blanken has created a swinging arrangement of the famous Scottish traditional tune Scotland the Brave. The usual version with bagpipes is the best known and there is a similarity in Swingin' Kilts owing to its long, drone-like tones in the accompaniment. The theme has been rhythmically adapted but it is still easily recognisable. Swingin' Kilts holds a challenge for every brass band. It makes demands in terms of timing and technique which give this work the bravura feel that will keep the audience as well as the musicians swinging in their seats.

This piece is dedicated to all the citizens who live, have lived, and will live in the US town of Algona, who commissioned the work to celebrate it's 150th anniversary. With dark-tinted tones (low drums, heavy brass), this overture begins with a primitive sacred feel, it seems as if centuries-old Indian singing is heard once more. Gradually the sound becomes clearer and brighter as the same theme travels throughout the band in various guises and variants. Imposing tutti passages then give the band the chance to lavishly shine. This bright and catchy overture radiates spontaneous energy and as it features every section of the band all the players as well as the listenersare continually surprised and captivated.
