Feuerfest - Josef Strauss

The piece has a distinctive Austrian flare like that of the Radetzky March, but is much more playable for young bands. Carl Strommen has set this nice little march for use in festival performance. American Ballad Variants
A fresh and spirited treatment of the traditional American ballad Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair, this fine piece for a developing band starts with a slow and atmospheric introduction featuring solos by flute and trumpet that hint at the tune. The main section sets the ballad to a driving Latin beat, but the slow reflective mood returns at the end with solos for clarinet, bass clarinet and flute.

These were generally community events that included square dancing, Morris and Contra, and English country dancing. Two Schumann Marches
Two favorite marches from Robert Schumann's Album for the Young have been tastefully arranged by John Cacavas for the young concert band. Two Grenadiers, the stately martial ballad begins with a processional air, but offers many contrasts. A cheerful melody opens the Soldier's March which is scored with more transparency and emphasis on individual sections. These short marches offer a pleasant alternative for any concert program. Elegy - Melvin L. Shelton
A touching and intense memoriam piece, the mechanics are on the easy side of Grade 4, but the demand for tone quality and control in tenuto passages and long slurred phrases calls for the best of musicianship from any group. The "Adagio e Rubato" tempo indication invites the kind of wonderfully expressive ensemble playing that should probably make up a larger part of band literature than it does today. Over a quiet unifying heartbeat from the timpani, the band explores the emotions felt after a tragic personal loss. A soaring F Horn solo (cued in Trumpet. and Alto Saxophone) leads poignantly toward a gentle Orchestra Bells and Wind Chime ending.

Pride of the Fleet - James L. Hosay
James L. Hosay is Americas most gifted and prolific writer of patriotic music for the concert band, works his magic once again in this thrilling composition. It's a challenging but accessible piece that keeps all the players involved with delightful parts to play. Mr. Hosay writes great F Horn parts!
