A Shakespeare Suite (from Richard III) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Walton, William - Noble, Paul

This music was composed in 1955 for the film Richard III and has been adapted for orchestral concert use by Muir Mathieson, and this Concert Band arrangement by Paul Noble. The orchestra version has been recorded on Columbia Records by the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by the composer, under the title Shakespeare Film Music. Concert Bands will find this music to be quite accessible, with abundant doubling, as was in the original scoring. The quality of William Walton's compositions should make this adaptation a must for festival performance, and a delight for audiences with an interesting touch of Renaissance.

Dances and Sonnets (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob

Dances and Sonnets is a piece by Jacob de Haan, inspired by the dance and poetry of the 19th Century Europe. Lively instrumental dances alternate with spoken sonnets that are recited by one or more readers, accompanied by quiet, solemn music to provide contrast. De Haan has compiled a list of suggested poems to be read, but other poems may be selected that better fit the occasion. Dances and Sonnets is a dramatic and truly special piece!Duration: 11:00

Chasing Orion (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Barrett, Roland

Chasing Orion refers to the practice of celestial navigation, or "sailing by the stars." It was inspired by the rich early history of maritime sailing and the commercial shipping industry. After traveling to distant and exotic lands, the fast clipper ships raced toward home, their holds bursting with grain, wool, spices, gold, and other treasures. Catapulted forward by the "roaring forties" wind currents, the sleek and elegant sailing ships swept around the ever-dangerous Cape Horn as they navigated by the stars, "chasing Orion." A dramatic new addition to the young band literature!Duration: 3.00

Arietta (from Masquerade Suite) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Halvorsen, Johan - Noble, Paul

Masquerade Suite was composed by Johan Halvorsen, one of the best-kept secrets of Norway. Not only was he an accomplished violinist and conductor, but also he was among the most prominent Norwegian composers in the generation following Edvard Grieg. His compositions develop the national Romantic tradition of his friends Grieg and Svendsen, but his was a distinctive style marked by brilliant orchestration inspired by the French Romantic composers. The original version of Masquerade Suite had nine movements. Paul Noble has selected five of the most suitable movements for band transcription and grouped them into this beautiful suite. The U.S. Navy Band in Washington, D.C. gave the premiere performance of this work. The first movement, Holberg Overture, sets the mood, pace, and musical themes for the entire suite, with rousing opening themes, followed by a grand fugue in the development section. This is clearly a piece for accomplished bands, giving all wind players a real workout. Each of the succeeding movements has a distinctive style, making the suite a significant addition to the repertoire of the Concert Band. Especially noteworthy is the Arietta, the easiest of the movements, and can easily stand alone with its haunting flute and oboe melodies and dramatic crescendo, the crisp solos in the Molinasque, and the final movement, which is very much like a circus march, fast, lively and short!

Walzerzauber (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Watz, Franz

The genre operetta (literally meaning 'small opera') originated halfway through the 19th century, as an antidote to the ever-lengthening opra comique, which by that time contained more and more tragic intrigues as well. In this charming work, three waltz melodies from different operettas come together. First, we hear 'Lippen schweigen' from Die lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow) by Franz Lhar (1870-1948). Then follows 'Ja, das alles auf Ehr' from Der Zigeunerbaron (The Gypsy Baron) by Johann Strauss the younger (1825-1899), after which 'Tanzen mchte ich' from Die Czardasfrstin by Emmerich Klmn (1882-1953) closes the medley in a cheerful way. Franz Watz has skilfully connected the waltzes to become a magical whole.Duration: 4:30

Concerto for Wind Ensemble (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Husa, Karel

Commissioned by the Michigan State University Alumni Band, this three movement work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Karel Husa was the winner of the first Louis Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in 1983. Previously available only in rental, this important work is now available for sale.A note from the composer: Divided into three movements, this work is a display of virtuoso passages given to solo instruments as well as to the groups of the ensemble. In the Fanfare of the first movement, the brass section "concertizes" in groups of four brass quintets (2 trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba or baritone), spread from left to right in back. The saxophones (S, A, T, B) are placed in front of the brass quintets, and the woodwinds occupy the front of the stage, with percussion on the left and right side. These groups, like the brass quintets, play in the concertante style, particularly in the first and last movements. At the same time, each movement contains individual solo passages (for example, timpani and flute in Movement I - "Drum Ceremony" and English horn and other low woodwinds in Movement II - "Elegy"). The composition of this piece was prompted by the excellence of wind and percussion players today, and by the incredible growth of wind ensembles, orchestras, and bands in the last 25 years. It is intended for their enjoyment.Duration: 23:00
