Night (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Fitzpatrick, Craig

Night is the result of a collaborative project between the composer and the 6th grade beginning band directed by his wife in Morton, Illinois. The students in her band class each write an eight-measure melody as a composition project which is part of the beginning band curriculum. These melodies each start and end on concert B-flat and use only the notes the students have learned on their instruments. The class voted on the best melody, and the winner was "Majestic Night, Oh Winter Night" by Sarah Gunter. The students then observed how this melody was developed by the composer into a concert band piece that they would perform later that year. Compositional terms such as repetition, fragmentation, and augmentation could then be taught to the 6th graders in a piece for young band that was written just for them. Duration: 2.30

Swiss Mountain Song (Flugel, Euphonium or Horn Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Huber, Ferdinand Furchtegott - Tinner, Gilbert

Swiss Mountain Song is based on a popular traditional song from Switzerland's Berner Land. The melody was composed by organist, Ferdinand Furchtegott Huber (1791-1863), whilst the text is taken from a poem by Josef Anton Jenne (1798-1870). Gilbert Tinner's arrangement for concert band retains the folk flavour of the original, with the solo part playable by a flugel horn, euphonium or French horn.Duration: 3:45

Prelude and Fugue (The Spitfire) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Walton, William - Noble, Paul

The Prelude and Fugue (The Spitfire) by William Walton, written to accompany the film, The First of the Few, was the film story of the designer of the Spitfire fighter aircraft, R. J. Mitchell. This work was lifted, almost bodily out of the film score: exceptionally (for film music) it needed hardly any modification to turn it into a first-rate concert piece. The prelude, called by Stephen Lloyd one of Walton's finest marches, is the music heard over the opening credit titles in the movie. A central lyrical solo depicts the exhaustion and dying by illness of the aircraft's designer R. J. Mitchell. The fugue is used to describe the making of the Spitfire, and then the patriotic march returns joined with the fugue to mark the completion of the fighter aircraft. The majestic march-like drama of the Prelude is well-suited for graduation and other ceremonial events, and the total piece is a tour de force for contest performance.

Viper (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Bocook, Jay

Paying tribute to the storied F-16 Fighting Falcon jet fighter (known to pilots as the "Viper" and flown by the USAF Thunderbirds), this unique and fresh-sounding overture from Jay Bocook is characterised by bold harmonies and driving rhythmic patterns. The opening slow section sets a mood of anticipation with dark sonorities and brief solos, followed by the fast section which contrasts a striking melody with moments of angular intensity.Duration: 3:20

Code of Honor (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Gassi, Vince

Code of Honor will inspire feelings of courage and adventure. A robust opening flows naturally into the main theme proposed by the trumpets, accompanied by the dauntless snare drummer. Uplifting harmonies add to the already spirited mood. Things calm down a bit during a moving but dignified lyrical section. We are soon propelled once again into action by the snare drum and our heroic theme carries us to a rousing conclusion.Duration: 2.45

Azure Hills (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hodges, Steve

Azure Hills is a lyrical ballad that presents the band with many opportunities for expressive playing. The theme is lightly presented by the flutes, then followed by another statement in the trumpets with added textures in the accompaniment. The second statement features some interesting harmonies by the woodwinds before leading into a very expressive final presentation of the melody with an added woodwind countermelody. A stirring variation and development leads to a very effective and climactic ending where melodic motives are passed from section to section as the piece winds down to a quiet, reflective conclusion.Duration: 3.30

America (Land of Liberty) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hodges, Steve

Beginning with a strong introduction by the trumpets, this arrangement provides three effective settings of America. The first two settings are at a moderate march tempo in 4/4 time featuring the clarinets and trumpets, followed by a lush presentation by the low brass and woodwinds. A lively flute countermelody accompanies the first setting. The final presentation begins with a brass chorale in the traditional 3/4 meter that leads to a stirring conclusion featuring a flowing woodwind countermelody. A short rallentando leads to a spirited return of the original march countermelody that brings the piece to an exciting conclusion. Duration: 2.30

Diversions on a Theme of Paganini (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Lane, Philip - Noble, Paul

This work is made up of eight short movements and was originally scored for brass quintet, being commissioned for performance by the London Gabrieli Ensemble. The full orchestra version was made in 2000 for a commercial recording by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia conducted by Gavin Sutherland, and the band arrangement was completed in 2009. The title is important in that the pieces are more musings than variations on the famous theme. The introduction stands somewhat apart, rather in the way the opening of Dohnanyi's Variations on a Nursery Tune does, and the subsequent diversions play with the theme, or parts of it, in movements lyrical, bombastic, or plain frivolous. The individual titles of the movements are self-explanatory, except to add that the last one always reminds the composer, for some reason, of final credits going up at the end of a film or television programme. Titles of the eight movements: 1. Introduction and Theme; 2. In Pieces; 3. Toccata; 4. Chaconne; 5. Cortege; 6. Popular Song; 7. Five-A-Side; 8. Epilogue. This piece will be a great workout for your band, with lots of opportunities for soloists, some rhythmic challenges, and great emotional stretches.
