Inspiration (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jan
Inspiration was commissioned by the Solothurnischer Kanotonal Musikverband in Switzerland in 1993. The composition begins with an A-theme written in a Phrygian tonality and, after an enormous climax, moves on into a quicker B-section, characterized by the use of wide interval jumps. Then follows the development in which both themes return individually and together. Peace and quiet is restored in the slow middle movement, based on the B-theme. The movement comes to a close with a tutti B-theme, brutally interrupted by fragments from the A-theme. Without a break, the final movement of this contrastive piece develops from these fragments. The theme of this extremely rhythmical closing movement is built up of elements from the A-theme, whilst the B-theme (from the slow middle movement) returns in full once more. Before the piece comes to a close in a resounding fortissimo, the cornet soloist performs the A-theme from the back of the auditorium, to special effect.Duration: 10:00

Deux Mouvements (Alto Saxophone Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Waignein, Andre
Early in 1989 Jean Baily, director of the Royal Conservatoire in Bruxelles, asked his very close friend Andre Waignein to compose a piece which could be performed by the conservatoire's saxophone class. Andre Waignein was readily agreeable. Not only was his father a saxophone player, but himself felt strongly attracted to the instrument and he was further encouraged into accepting the commission by his friend Alain Crepin, saxophone teacher at the Bruxelles Conservatoire. The piece he composed consists of two movements, hence the title. An elegy is expressed by means of a melody which is full with pronounced magnanimity, full of spectacular musical freedom enabling the soloist to express himself to the full. In this movement the melodic element is of the utmost importance. The capriccio, the second movement is musically disconcerting. The band's accompaniment is particularly important. Due to the high notes, the soloist brings this capriccio to a close with enthusiastic virtuosity.Duration: 9:15

Centennial Prelude (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan
This short opening music was composed on commission of the symphonic band of Jan Van der Roost's village (= Kontich near Antwerp / Belgium). In 1991, this community band celebrated its 100th anniversary. After composing commissioned pieces from different countries (even from Japan), this was the most 'near' commission he ever received indeed! It is a short but varied piece, featuring all sections of the band. After a short introduction, played by the brass instruments, a crisp rhythm starts and boxes the main theme. After a second theme, played by brass and percussion, a short melodical passage brings some 'rest'. At the end, the fanfare of the introduction reoccurs. Although this "Centennial Prelude" isn't a really demanding piece, it sounds colourful and energetic. It has been recorded on CD by the band of the 'Royal Dutch Airforce' and the 'Desford Colliery Brass band'.Duration: 3:30

Mexican Pictures (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Cesarini, Franco
Your band will love getting acquainted with Mexican Pictures, a suite in four movements based on Mexican folk music. The first movement, El Butaquito, is based on a very lively folk-song of the same name and is characterised by its many contrasting rhythms. The second movement, Romance Mejicano, creates a peaceful and romantic atmosphere. The title of the third movement, Ballaviejo, means 'Antique Dance', in which the word antique refers to the rhythms that were taken to America by Africa's black population. La Charreada, the final movement, depicts the popular Mexican Rodeo, where the action in the arena is usually supported by instrumental ensembles, the so-called 'Mariacchi'.Duration: 14:30

Hunting Tower (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Respighi, Ottorino - Cesarini, Franco
Not much is known about the origin of Huntingtower, except for the fact that this ballad was composed in 1931 by the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936), commissioned by Edwin Franko Goldman and the American Bandmaster Association, and was premiered on 17 April 1932 at a concert in memory of John Philip Sousa in Washington D.C. It is not even certain whether Respighi arranged the work himself, or left this to someone else. Huntingtower is the name of a castle in Scotland, where Respighi spent some time. It is possible that this ballad contains his musical impressions of his stay there. The orchestration on this CD, made by Franco Cesarini in 1987, is an adaptation of the work to the demands of the contemporary concert band.Duration: 7:30

Boz Dances (from Master Humpreys Clock) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Binney, Malcolm
Master Humphrey's Clock was inspired by the weekly periodical produced by Charles Dickens in which appeared a miscellany of short sketches. Malcolm Binney's work was commissioned for the Kent County Wind Orchestra, it therefore seemed appropriate that a piece writen especially for Kentish performers, should draw, for inspiration on the literarary works of one of the County's most famous inhabitants. The Boz Dances (Boz was a pseudonym under which Dickens wrote) are taken from all four parts of extended work and explore the miriad of personalities, childhood fantasies of theatre, fairy tales and imagined scenes so loved by Dickens. Great fun, inspired, exhilarating and thrilling to listen to.Duration: 10:30

El Camino Real (A Latin Fantasy) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Reed, Alfred
El Camino Real (The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was commissioned by the 581st Air Force Band and its commander, Lt. Col. Ray E. Toler. This fantasy is based on a series of Spanish folk melodies and underscored by chord progressions used by generations of flamenco guitarists, whose fiery style and brilliant playing have created a vast body of what many consider authentic Spanish music. The music follows a traditional fast-slow-fast pattern, with a first section that is based on the dance form known as the jota, and second contrasting section derived from the fandango.

A Festive Overture (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Reed, Alfred
A Festive Overture was commissioned by the Tri-State Festival, held annually under the auspices of the Music Division of Dickinson State College in Dickinson, North Dakota, for performance at the 1963 Festival. The first performance took place on November 2nd, 1963, at the concluding grand concert of the festival, with the Dickinson State College Symphonic Band under the composer's direction. The score is in traditional overture form, a brilliant opening allegro followed by a reflective, lyrical interlude, and concluding with a return to the first themes and mood. The entire work is built on three motifs, which are heard in the first section, with the middle section developed from one of these, which first appears as the bass line to the main theme. In the course of the work, the full resources of the modern, integrated concert band are called upon, to present these motifs in constantly varied forms and combinations, and in scintillating tone colors. The wording of the commission presented a basic challenge: that of writing a major work on the highest musical level and yet capable of performance by a good high school band. We believe that this challenge has been met, and are proud to offer this work as a contribution to the modern school and concert band repertoire.
