Hail the Champions - James Curnow
Commissioned for the University of Akron Symphonic Band, this dynamic work celebrates 100 years of music composed for the Olympic Games. Based on three primary themes, the first is a brilliant fanfare that serves as anintroduction as well as a unifying link throughout. Second is the 1896 Olympic Hymn (music by Spyros Samaras) set in a beautiful lyric style which builds to a magnificent climax juxtaposed with the opening fanfare. The finalsection presents a new version of Mr. Curnow's own Olympic Fanfare and Theme for the Olympic Flag which was commissioned for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and performed again in 2000. The dramatic closing is again combinedwith elements of the opening fanfare. Dur: c. 6:40 (Recorded by the University of Akron Symphony Band - Dr. Galen S. Karriker, Director of Bands. Liberty - Rossano Galante
Comprised of two main themes, Liberty strives to capture the essence of Americana. The first of the two themes is stated by a trumpet duet, then later the full ensemble. The second theme is robust and emotionally dynamic and accompanied by a driving, rhythmic pulse. The arc of the piece returns to the first theme, this time more transparent, and ending on a gentle, quiet note. A rewarding work for winds with plenty of variety and depth. Dur: 5:15 (Recorded by the West Genesee (NY) High School Wind Ensemble, Andrew Perry, conductor) (G. Schirmer, Inc.)

UNO-Marsch - Robert Stolz
In the 1960's, Austrian composer Robert Stolz (1880-1975) wrote the "UNO-Marsch" op. 1275, the United Nations March. He was inspired and motivated by his friend Ralph Bunche, a U.S. diplomat and civil rights activist. Even as an adolescent, African-American Bunche was concerned with race issues and repression. With time he acquired high political status and was a mediator for the United Nations during several global crises. In 1950, he was the first Black person to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The two friends Ralph Bunche and Robert Stolz (who had left his homeland in the National Socialism era) felt strongly connected by their revulsion of racial segregation and by their wish for humanity's peaceful coexistance."UNO-Marsch" honors the important work of the United Nations and is a musical tribute to the larger goal of peace. The composition gained particular European popularity when the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Mariss Jansons opened their famous New Year's concert in 2016 with "UNO-Marsch".
