£143.00Downtown Divertimento (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Meij, Johan
The inspiration for Downtown Divertimento comes from Johan de Meijs daily wanderings in Chelsea, in lower Manhattan. The day begins with a leisurely walk to Madison Square Park with his dog Alice. They visit the dog run where she meets up withother city canines. On the way back they have a moment of reflection looking at the nearby Flatiron Building, the striking triangular city landmark. Johan goes for a run later in the day. His jogging shoes naturally head for The Highline, anabandoned railway viaduct that was transformed into a lushly landscaped National Park. He absorbs the spectacular views of the Hudson River and the majestic New York skyline as if seeing them for the first time. The movements are: 1) Dog Play (at Madison Square Park); 2) Flatiron Reverie; 3) Hitting the Highline. Duration: 11.00

Satoshi Yagisawa has lived in Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture in Japan since he was in elementary school. Around Christmas time every year in Ichikawa City, seven Chiba high school bands hold a joint concert. For the 20th anniversary the composer was asked to write a piece to be performed to close the concert. This piece was first performed in 2010 by Tadashi Yoshida, conductor and close friend of Satoshi Yagisawa, with a combined wind orchestra from Chiba Prefectural Kokubun High School, Chiba Prefectural Ichikawa Nishi High School, Chiba Prefectural Matsudo Mutsumi High School, Chiba Prefectural Matsudo Akiyama High School, Chiba Prefectural Matsudo Yakiri High School, Chiba Prefectural Funabashi Nishi High School and Chiba Prefectural Shiroi High School. The title was chosen from suggestions submitted by participating students. Dream Cruise was chosen by Satomi Otsu, a junior in Chiba Prefectural Matsudo Mutsumi High School Wind Orchestra. The composer skillfully scored this piece and created the chorus part so that all the hundreds of students could participate in the performance. This version has been revised so it can be played without the chorus part.Duration: 4.30

Towards the Future was commissioned by the Nagoya City Fire Bureau for the 50th anniversary of the Nagoya City Fire Bureau Band (Nagoya, Japan). Composer Robert W. Smith's journey to the San Francisco Bay Area inspired this musical panorama. Beginning with an intriguing fanfare statement representing the unforgettable skyline of San Francisco and the unique images of the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges, our journey begins north over the waters of the bay. Sailing across the water, we are treated to magnificent vistas including both the city and the surrounding mountains. An early morning sunrise looking down on the vineyards of Sonoma was the inspiration for the center of the piece. The early morning mist combined with light and shadow creates a very peaceful scene that is not soon forgotten. The piece concludes with the return to the city providing a new perspective of this truly unique American landscape.Duration: 6.15

The Hida High School is in a highland city called Takayama in Gifu Prefecture. Takayama City has some of the highest mountains in Japan, atmospheric rows of houses and streets, and a beautiful landscape. The magnificent views from these mountains can be described as a paradise above the clouds. When the composer visited there in the summer of 2001, the lovely flowers spreading through the valley and the refreshing air welcomed him. The flowers looked as if they were fashionably dressed and fully enjoying conversation and a short summer at a reunion party. The composer was inspired by this scenery to compose this piece. The musical party opens with happy greetings of a reunion and joyful themes follow one after another. A light xylophone solo, a waltz and an adagio featuring alternate solos by alto saxophone, euphonium and trumpet lead to a brilliant finale featuring brass and percussion played in irregular time. A beautiful musical picture that your band will enjoy performing for many years.Duration: 10:45

The name of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) is inextricably connected to the German city of Leipzig. This modest and very dutiful master composer worked like a diligent civil servant. From 1723 until his death in 1750, he was cantor of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the Bach Festival takes place in this city every year. The hallmark of Leipzig is internationality that every year, soloists come from far and near to perform the baroque music again. The Bach Festival inspired the Dutch composer Henk Hogestein to write Memories of Leipzig, which is based on a theme from one of Bach's arias.Duration: 2:15
