This work is a commission by the Missouri Bandmasters Association to honor the 50th Anniversary of the MMEA. From the opening melody stated by unison flutes, 1st clarinet and 1st trumpet, the work quickly starts through a development of that melody that only this composer does so well. The writing is very "rubato" chorale style often interrupted with short allegro sections but always returning to the opening statement. There is a short flute solo passage as well as a very fluent alto sax solo. A dramatic piece that bands will enjoy playing for years to come.

Missa Solemnis contains all the musical parts that are used to accompany liturgical rites. Celebration Overture was composed in the summer of 1976 and was given first prize judged by William Alwyn whose film scores Philip Lane has worked on for commercial recordings in the last 10 years. It is truly a celebratory piece with a dramatic pyramid opening, followed by the melodic introduction in solo clarinet, then solo trumpet, before accelerating to a rousing burst of celebration. A rich slower middle section leads into the return of celebration. This piece is included on several lists of recommended festival and contest literature. The Breeze Brass Band, based in Osaka, Japan, is a professional ensemble, which was founded in 1990 to encourage the growth of brass bands there. They have invited many leading British conductors, composers and soloists to share their expertise and without doubt have been responsible, through concerts and recordings, for a huge increase in interest in brass bands in their country.In November 2000 they reached their 10th anniversary and commissioned Philip Sparke, a frequent visitor, to write a piece to celebrate the occasion. Flying the Breeze was the result and the composer made the concert band transcription in 2004.The piece opens with three repeated notes (in the brass band version these were written Bs - BBB being the band's initials) and a short introduction leads to a robust theme from the clarinets, horns and trombones, which is then taken up by trumpets. A restless bridge passage leads to a syncopated tune from the alto saxophone and then to a third theme from a solo euphonium. A graceful second subject, initially on a solo clarinet, leads back to a recall of the introductory material before a full-scale recapitulation. An intense allargando leads to a full-band version of the second subject under a running woodwind passage, which leads to a short coda.Duration: 6:00

The Winds Of Power - Nigel Hess
Unlike Nigel Hess's other works for wind band, The Winds of Power is not a programmatic work. After a dark and menacing opening a solo trumpet introduces a theme which will eventually become the centre of a piece and is soon heard tutti in a lyrical form. This is interrupted by a return to the opening mood, with only a brief respite in the form of a chorale for clarinet choir and harp. The theme tries to return once more in a rousing, somewhat cinematic version, but again the sense of foreboding overtakes it. An unsettling march-like section follows before the theme returns in its most lyrical and gentle guise, introduced by solos in the woodwind section. Eventually, a maestoso statement which erupts into a presto coda, ends the journey in a triumphant, more optimistic blaze of sound.

The main theme, which is broad and lyrical, is stated by horns and winds. As the piece develops, the theme is played by full, chordal brass accompanied by rhythmic woodwind lines. The B section is lightly orchestrated with a solo oboe accompanied by the clarinet section, slowly growing to a tutti statement. The piece recapitulates with bold brass chords.
