March of the Trolls - Edvard Grieg / arr. Brian Beck
Edvard Grieg (1843--1907) is best known for his eternally popular Piano Concerto in A Minor, as well as more than 150 songs and 66 lyric pieces. is from his Lyric Pieces, Op. 54. Trolls are a constant theme in Norwegian folklore and can be viewed as the equivalent of our "boogie man." Far to the north in Norway where the winter storms whip the weather-beaten coasts, you will find dark forests with moonlit lakes, deep fjords surrounded by mighty snowcapped mountains, and long rivers and cold streams cascading down the mountain sides. This is where you might find the irritable, short-tempered trolls coming out of their hiding places after sunset, marching to wreck havoc on unsuspecting Norwegian households. Third Suite (I. March, II. Waltz, III. Rondo) - Robert Jager
Composed in 1966, this three movement work is performed regularly in contests and festivals as well as on concert band programs globally. The unique setting of this original work provides subtle challenges to the performers and conductor with enhanced interest for the listener. The movements are "March"---non-characteristically scored in alternating 4/4 and 3/4 time, "Waltz"---similarly juxtaposed in alternating 3/4 and 2/4 time, and the raucous "Rondo." Moorside March - Gustav Holst / arr. Douglas E. Wagner
was written in 1928 as a test piece for the National Brass Band Festival championship competition held that year. The three-movement work includes a jaunty "Scherzo," a lovely "Nocturne," and the popular "March," which has enjoyed countless performances since its premiere. Douglas E. Wagner created this arrangement with younger players in mind. Though slightly abridged, the main themes and styles are present in a carefully-crafted performance piece accessible to concert bands at this level. Cedar Valley March - Steve Hodges

March Prelude: Alnwick Town - Philip Sparke
March Prelude: Alnwick Town was commissioned by the Alnwick Playhouse Concert Band (with Ray Thompson as conductor) to celebrate their first 25 years. It opens majestically with answering phrases between various sections of the band, leading to a faster march-like section its main theme echoes the rhythms of the opening material. A bridge passage featuring snippets for saxophones and trumpets leads to a new theme, more legato in nature and repeated after a change of key. The bridge passage returns to herald a restatement of the main theme before the opening material reappears to close the work with a flourish.

Triumphal March - Modest Mussorgsky
The opera-ballet Mlada was an epic project involving six different Russiancomposers including Mussorgsky, Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov. Unfortunately the work didn't ever receive a performance howeverthe festive march assumed a life of its own in an orchestration byRimsky-Korsakov. This has remained one of Mussorgsky's lesserknownworks however it has been given a new lease of life with this fine arrangement for concert band.
