It was a totally unexpected attack that happened while the crowded open-air market was in progress. Over 1600 innocent citizens were killed.This was one of the most senseless and abhorrent war crimes in history. In this new work by Jan Hadermann the music of the Basque region can clearly be heard, with street musicians adding lustre to the open-air market with dance music. Spring is in the air when suddenly from behind the mountaintops, the death squad appears and all hell breaks loose. The work ends with an intense plea to never let anything like this happenagain. A moving and contemplative new work for concert band.

Wedding Dances - Daron Aric Hagen
A concert version of the dance music from the second act of the sensational opera for voices and wind ensemble by Daron Aric Hagen (see Overture above), this varied and colorful piece will be a brilliant addition to the program of a Grade for band. The music dramatically reflects the growing conflicts of the story (based on Othello) and climaxes with a powerful setting of the big tune associated with the idea of "crossing over" from Mexico to the U.S., and from Life to Death. This piece is a major addition to the serious band repertoire and has been added to the Texas UIL Prescribed Music List. Duration: 7'

Klezmer was originally the name given to the music of the Yiddish speaking Jews in Eastern Europe. The klezmer musicians played dance music, mainly at weddings. Historically string instruments such as the violin were predominantly used, but later (after ca. 1900) other instruments and in particular the clarinet were added as melodic instruments. In klezmer music in addition to Balkan influences oriental and gipsy influences can also be found. Jacob de Haan composed Klezmania in this style, based on the well-known Hebrew song Hava Nagila.

While much of the music played in the pubs is rhythmic dance music, the area is also known for some lovely ballads.

The many sided and productive Michael Praetorius (1571-1621) is knwon as a composer of dance music, sacred music and music for the advent and Christmas time. He worked as Kapelmeister to the court at Wolffenbuttel, but he was also asked to serve in other places, includin Dresden. Praetorius was valued for the new impulses he gave to music by means of his use of instrumental accompaniment. His main contribution is his theoretical work "Syntagma Musicum", one of the most important musical refernce books, in connection with instruments and instrumentation in the early 17th Century. "Es ist ein ros entsprungen" is a well known ancient melody which has inspired numerous composers andarrangers througout the Centuries. Otto M. Schwarz has made a choral arrangement.

This piece was written for the Nottingham Wind Ensemble to celebrate 30 years of music making. The piece describes a party or celebration deep in Sherwood Forest with the legendary Robin Hood, Maid Marian and the Merry Men. The word "Merry" in those days meant following an outlaw or a leader rather than the way we use it today. The music invites us into the forest with a gentle modal oboe solo which is joined by other instruments as it proceeds to the party. Various melodic episodes introduce elements of folk and dance music from the whole of the British Isles before the music concludes with a recapitulation of the opening bars. The score is written in such a way as to allow bands with fewer resources to play the piece successfully, whilst ensuring a full wind orchestra orchestration is included. Duration: 4.00
