Choral Music (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob
Jacob de Haan was commissioned to write Choral Music a concert band from Dinxperlo (Netherlands). This band gave the work its premiere in 1997 during the World Music Contest in Kerkrade. Choral Music is based on the chorale Sollt ich meinem Gott nicht singen by the seventeenth century German composer Johann Schop. Contrary to the title, Choral Music has nothing in common with a traditional choral arrangement. This contrasting work has a flashing beginning and only much later following on several thematic changes does Jacob de Haan allow the chorale melody to develop into its original form. Following this episode the chorale becomes a toccata developing into a whirlwind finish.Duration: 5:45

Overture to a New Age (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jan
A new era dawns-heralded by solemn brass fanfares. What does the future hold? In his work Overture to a New Age, Jan de Haan expresses on the one hand anticipation, on the other also an awareness that things won't always be as rosy as they sometimes appear. Ultimately, however, confidence and hope win through, represented by Jan de Haan in a brilliant coda. The new age can begin!Duration: 13:45

Trois Rag - Caprices (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Milhaud, Darius - De Meij, Johan
The French composer Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a member of the Groupe des Six. This group of six composers gathering Honegger, Poulence, Auric, Durey, Tailleferre and Milhaud, imitated Erik Satie by revolting against the deeply rooted traditional conventions of that time. They reacted against impressionism (Debussy) and romanticism (Wagner, Mahler) and felt very strongly about the music of Satie and Stravinsky. Milhaud's most popular work is undoubtedly the ballet La Creation du Monde, one of the most striking examples of jazz influences in classical music. The premiere at the Theatre des Champs Elysees in October 1923 caused a real scandal with the Paris public. The Trois Rag-Caprices for piano were composed one year earlier, in the summer of 1922, and could be considered as a kind of preliminary sketch for La Creation du Monde. There are indeed clear similarities between both compositions as to the rhythmical and harmonic aspects. The Trois Rag-Caprices were orchestrated for symphony orchestra by Milhaud himself some time later. The same happened to Saudades do Brasil (1920), a piano composition punctuated with Latin-American influences, which was written after his stay in Rio de Janeiro (1917-18) exactly as his ballet Le Boeuf sur le Toit. Johan de Meij's orchestration of Trois Rag-Caprices for symphonic band is a most welcome addition next to the original band works of Milhaud, such as Suite Francaise (1945) and West Point Suite (1951).Duration: 8.00

Elegy & Scherzo - Johan de Meij
Elegy & Scherzo was written at the request of cellist Yuki Ito, to commemorate the 150th birthyear in 2023 of Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873 - 1943). Composer Johan de Meij used some hints and quotes from Rachmaninoff's 2nd Symphony (opus 27) and the Symphonic Dances (opus 45), to embrace the sound world of the Russian master. Elegy & Scherzo was premiered on October 27, 2023, in the Cankarjev Dom in Ljubljana, Slovenia by the Band of the Slovenian Armed Forces, with Yuki Ito as the cello soloist and the composer conducting.

Rcitatif et Ronde - Francis de Bourguignon
In September 1925, on the occasion of the sixty-fifth birthday of their 'master', seven students of Paul Gilson gathered to form the first composers' collective in Belgian national music history. The members of Les Synthtistes (the Synthetists) are Ren Bernier, Francis de Bourguignon, Gaston Brenta, Tho Dejoncker, Marcel Poot, Maurice Schoemaker and Jules Strens. Their intent is twofold and both theoretical and practical. Les Synthtistes want to distinguish themselves as the 'Brussels seven' by breaking away from the prevailing late-romantic music of their time. Their theoretical aim is to synthesize the modern tendencies in music from 1925 onwards, to connect with the 'acquisitions of contemporary music' and to apply them within balanced and well-defined forms. Their practical goal is to make it easier to find a stage to perform their new symphonic music by uniting. In a period when there is no professional symphonic orchestra in Belgium, apart from the opera orchestra, they compose and transcribe their original symphonic works for wind band. They work together with Arthur Prevost and the Royal Band of the Belgian Guides which grew into a model instrumentation of 85 musicians during the interwar period. Thanks to Prevost and the Guides a unique collection of original, modern music for wind band by Les Synthtistes can be heard on the Brussels concert stages during the interwar period. Because only a few works of this unique, forgotten collection of 75 works were published, this unique canon remained largely unknown. Thanks to a historical study of sources by Luc Vertommen, these works for wind band are now, a century after their creation, made accessible and recorded for the first time.
