This composition is based on the hymn Aberystwyth, named after a seaside town on the west coast of Wales. It is Jacob de Haan's favourite hymn from the 120 Hymns for Brass Band. The work consists of three continuous movements in which the theme of Aberystwyth comes forward in a variety of attractive ways, so that it forms a variegated whole which is captivating to players and listeners alike. The town of Zevenhuizen (Seven Houses) in the Dutch province of Groningen conceived the idea to assemble 777 musicians for an experimental open air concert. Within that context, Jacob de Haan was commissioned to write a special composition for the local music society Concordia on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary. The full number of musicians could not be realised entirely, but the performance was a great happening nonetheless. Now, the music has been published in a compilation, with the most appealing melodies in a varying style of rock music and ballads. He used the melodious Andante cantabile from the String Quartet Op. 11 by the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky as its starting point. The most important musical contributor to the James Bond movies has been composer John Barry (1933 - 2011). Rotterdam 1945 was written at the request of Maestro Arjan Tien, the chief conductor of the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy, to commemorate their 75th anniversary in 2020. 1945 also marked the end of World War II, the year that my home country Holland was liberated from Nazi Germany. My father was born in Rotterdam in 1910, so I have a special bond with this dynamic city. I have used the numbers 1-9-4-5 to create the main theme and translated it into a four-note motif: C - D'- F - G. - Johan de Meij. Duration: 7.30
