The English composer Andrew Lloyd Webber (1948) has been able to produce one world success after another over the past five decades. The controversial musical and film Jesus Christ Superstar (1971) was followed by Evita (1976), Cats (1981), Song and Dance (1982), a combination of Variations and Tell me on a Sunday, Starlight Express (1984) and Requiem (1985). His Phantom of the Opera premiered in 1986 starring Sarah Brightman (Lloyd Webber's former wife) and Michael Crawford. The musical won both the Laurence Olivier Award and the Evening Standard Drama Award for Best Musical of 1986.

Fascinated by the beauty of Chicago, Franco Cesarini has translated his emotions into music: this is how Symphony No. 3 "Urban Landscapes" Op. 55, was born, a musical portrait of this metropolis overlooking Lake Michigan. The composition is divided into three movements: The Wrigley Building from Dawn to Noon, Blue Silhouette and Cloud Gates, which by sharing the same thematic material arranged in cyclical form, strengthen the overall cohesion of the piece. The first movement, preceded by a short slow introduction in which the main theme is presented in an almost dreamlike form, metaphorically represents the city at dawn. The sudden change of time symbolizes the start of activities with all its noises and sounds: you can hear the bell that announces the closing of the subway doors, the sound of cars speeding by, the siren of a patrol car. If the first movement represents the day, the second introduces a nocturnal environment: a melancholic melody played by the English horn anticipates a more animated tempo depicting melodies coming from jazz clubs. Powerful fanfares that take up the second theme of the first movement introduce the third movement. In this finale, the role of the two themes is reversed compared to the first movement and one takes the place of the other in a kind of games of mirrors. Symphony No. 3 "Urban Landscapes" Op. 55: a sumptuous musical portrait of the "Windy City".

Lux Futura (Light of the Future) was commissioned by the Royal Wind Orchestra Delft and is inspired by the letters 'D-E-L-F-T' using the letter notation system by Bla Bartk. In this 'Delft' cell, there is referral to the 'Trinitas', the bourdon bell of the Old Church in Delft, that only tolls during a funeral of a member of the Dutch Royal Family. The Delft melody switches to the 'Agneta March', which is a reference to the history of the Royal Wind Orchestra Delft. Further on the love theme, played by the bass instruments represents the love of the inhabitants for their city throughout space and time. In the middle movement, the beauty of the city is depicted by the coranglais (English horn) solo, as an ode to the lovely city of Delft. When performed, one can choose to use sound city samples recorded in Delft to create a truly magnificent spectacle. The poignant lament Mo Chile Mear (My Gallant Hero) was authored after the defeat of the Scots and their Celtic allies at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, ending dreams of independence from English rule. Michael's emotional setting opens with a flute solo then builds gradually as layers of instrumental groups are added. The piece shifts to a lilting 6/8 style, propelled by the percussion section, and culminates in a majestic statement by the entire ensemble.

Frank Bridge (1879 - 1941) was one of the leading English composers of his time. In October 1922 he adapted his popular string quartet Sir Roger de Coverley for full symphony orchestra and Sir Henry Wood agreed, at the last minute, to include it in the last night of the Queen's Hall Promenade Concerts at the end of that month.This elaborate and colourful orchestral version has never been widely performed, but has now been brilliantly transcribed by Alastair Wheeler to provide a miniature dance poem for grade 5 level concert band.Bridge's lively treatment of one of England's most famous traditional dance melodies willmake a fitting end to any concert, with the strains of Auld Lang Syne introduced by Bridge as a nod towards Sir Roger de Coverley's traditional function as the final dance of a Christmas Ball, as it was in Old Mr. Fezziwig's party in Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

Between 1905 and 1934, Gustav Holst was Director of Music at St Paul's Girls School in Brook Green, London. St Paul's Suite, written for the school's string orchestra, was premiered there in 1913 and consists of four movements: an energetic Jig in 6/8 and 9/8, Ostinato, based on a simple 4-note theme, Intermezzo, an energetic and rhythmic dance and Finale, adapted from the Second Suite in F in which Holst brilliantly combines The Dargason and The English Dancing Master, with the traditional melody, Greensleeves.

The third movement of Opus 34 (Three Festival Choruses), which Gustav Holst penned in 1916, was originally scored for chorus with piano, orchestra, or military band. The easily recognized melody is a nineteenth century Welsh ballad, known to most as the hymn tune "St. Denio," set to the words of English poet, Clifford Bax. In 3/4, this characteristically delightful Holst theme has been freely arranged to incorporate elements of his original score with additional material included to heighten musical interest for contemporary concert bands and audiences alike. As the title implies, chimes are an integral part of this arrangement: however, there are alternate options provided inthe program notes if a suitable instrument is unavailable.
