£309.99Vulcan - Michael Daugherty
(2014) Vulcan for Concert Band is Grammy award winning composer Michael Daugherty's first work for the high school and intermediate level college band. The work is a colorful homage to Gene Roddenberry's interstellar universe as depicted in the classic American television series Star Trek (1966-69). The title refers to the fiery planet Vulcan, home world of half-human, half-Vulcan Mr. Spock. As the rational-minded science officer aboard the starship Enterprise (commanded by the hot-blooded Captain James T. Kirk), Mr. Spock grapples with the fascinating predicament of making decisions predicated on human emotion versus Vulcan logic. Daugherty has composed stirring, yet highly structured music that alludes to the Vulcan Pon Farr ritual, Vulcan telepathic mind-melds, and the volcanic planet itself. At the the Ann Arbor, Michigan world premiere (utilizing the combined forces of the Pioneer, Huron and Skyline High School bands), Vulcan was an immediate hit and will surely become one of Daugherty's most performed works. Instrumentation The number of players doubling each part is at the conductor's discretion, but should be in keeping with a balanced sound. Christmas on the Thames is a fantasy of English Christmas carols circling around the beloved melody I Saw Three Ships. It reflects the buzz of activity both on the streets of London and on board a schooner bound for port loaded with cargo and gifts. Decorations are put in the shop windows; the aroma of warm chestnuts and puddings fill the air; carolers sing; the mulled punch known as wassail is drunk. Nova Stella: New Star Fanfare is based on the chorus of the traditional English carol, Nova! Nova! Ave Fit Ex Eva. The fanfare begins with three or more antiphonal brass players placed throughout the concert hall. Large percussion forces, which includes optional parts, are used to help introduce the rest of the ensemble as they join in the musical celebration. As the full ensemble joins in, the combined efforts of all the performers coalesce into an overwhelming expression of unbridled musical joy.

Major Yvon Ducene wanted a new lush and colourful composition for his Guides military band, with Andr Waignein as its composer. Early in 1979 the composer began his assignement and in October of the same year, the finished full score was on the music stands of this prestigious military band of the Belgian Army.The introduction (Grave) mirrors an atmosphere full of serenity in which the theme, played by the oboes and the English horn is predominant and immediately holds the listener spell-bound. It is taken up again as central element of the slow movement.The Allegro breaks away from the quiet passion of the introduction. Here, the band can really show its capabilities to thefull. Based on a very precise rythm, an idiom of sudden desperation and adversity develops which, fused with a crushing agression, culminates in a kind of eruption, soom calmed down by a Lento : peace and quiet has returned thanks to a melody by the horns and soon taken over by the clarinets. In the meantime, the saxophone - an instrument full of human emotion - express the main spatial dimension in contemporary psyche. Following a harmonic transition the brass-players take up the theme again in forte whilst the basses and the woodwinds interwine in technical arabesques.The movings of the mind and the heart get an audible and almost touchable shape in the ensuing Allegro, a movement characterized by a rhythmic dialogue in which the whole orchestra participates and where the exposition contains a wealth of sound and technical contrasts. The Lento finally uses the central theme of the slow movement again, with some occasional references to the two allegros. The last page is of unprecedented grandeur. All the instruments display their most beautiful sound which were named by Jacques Ferschotte, when speaking about Honneger, "harmonies d'intensits" harmonies of the unmeasurable.

The English composer Sir Edward Elgar wrote the five Pomp and Circumstance marches between 1901 and 1930, the time of the British Empire, when the colonial and strategic world power of England was at its peak. March No. 3 in C minor, although less well-known then March No.1, was regarded by the composer as the most successful of the marches in terms of composition technique and musical content. The dark colours of the minor tonality and the hopeful sounding cantabile theme are extremely impressive, giving the march its unique character. Hornpipe Highlights - Johan Nijs
The Hornpipe is a typical Celtic solo dance, traditionally danced and performed by English sailors. A sound often associated with the Hornpipe is that of the Bdhran, an Irish drum made with a sheep's skin head. Lion City Festival was commissioned as one of the test pieces for the Singapore Youth Festival 2010, an annual event at which school ensembles from throughout Singapore can receive gold, silver or bronze awards for their performance. The English name for Singapore comes from Malay Singapura, which has Sanskrit roots meaning 'Lion City'. Lion City Festival is in the form of a quick march in ABA form. An opening fanfare leads to a perky march tune which is taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a legato trio section before the main theme returns in varied form. Roaring fun!
