Warm-up Fundamentals was conceived as a tool for directors to use as part of a daily ensemble routine. It covers important fundamental concepts such as breathing, long tones, interval slurs, articulation, flexibility, chords and chorales. Each section breaks concepts down to their most fundamental elements before integrating them together. This gradual approach to the ensemble warm-up helps extend the practical applications of these exercises well into rehearsals and performances. Each instrument part fits on one folded piece of paper, so it's extremely practical in size and can easily fit inside a folder without issue. These warm-ups are also ideal for guest conducting appearances such as honor bands, where conductors need to achieve a uniform sound in a short amount of time. In this suite commissioned by the Canadian Brass and the Eastman Wind Ensemble, arranger Michael Sweeney focuses on a select number of movements, often using the brass quintet to represent the vocal lines found in the original. The striking and beautiful work includes Alleluia, Sanctus, the well-known A Simple Song, Agnus Dei, Offertory and Almighty Father. Although scored for brass quintet and wind ensemble, ample cues are provided to allow this to be performed by a wind ensemble or symphonic band alone. Duration: 15.00

'Courte Ouverture' as translated from the French means 'Short Overture'. Written for a medium level ensemble, it commences with a high trill in the piccolo followed by a flourish in the flutes before the main theme is introduced. This primary melody can be heard throughout the selection. It then transitions into an almost hymn-like middle section before an accelerando takes us back to the flute flourish and main theme. This piece uses the music ensemble to its fullest. Memorable melodies and traditional harmonies are spread throughout the instrumentation. This large full score (11" x 17") is available for this entry in our Wind Band Select series at normal discount. Paul Richards, composition teacher at the University of Florida, works with diverse musical genres, and this is reflected in Medium Funk Prelude, a brief dance in which a small group of figures are transformed and tossed about in the ensemble. Its title was in fact inspired by tempo markings in a jazz fake book. An unconventional yet challenging and exciting work for the advanced high school or university ensemble.

Bahumba is a nonsense word but a no-nonsense selection for concert band. The word stems from a sound composer Peter Sciaino heard coming from an idling car. The engine, clearly having issues, had an "uneven" gate or pulse. He mindlessly heard the word "Bahumba" within the sounds emerging from the struggling motor. Just like an engine, an ensemble can attain a smooth groove even if "uneven" in terms of pulse. While the percussionists are often asked to provide this groove under the melodic lines, they ultimately break out with a feature that essentially places a percussion ensemble within the context of a concert band piece.
