The Passacaglia is a set of instrumental variations based on an ostinato bass. Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C-minor for organ represents the pinnacle of what had been achieved in this compositional form at that time. In Franco Cesarini's arrangement for large wind orchestra, the particularly careful interpretation of the original piece enables him to exploit all the sound colors at his disposal, and in this sumptuous guise Bach's work also takes on a grandiose dimension, albeit tinged with late-Romanticism. The exposition of the beautiful theme begins in the bass part, immediately creating a solemn and serious atmosphere which is accentuated by the intensely pathetic character of the first variations. Up to the tenth variation it remains confined to the bass, but in subsequent ones it also passes to the soprano and alto register. The integrity of the theme is also embellished with elegant arpeggios, in whose lower and higher extensions the theme can be distinguished. Towards the end it returns to the bass in an impressive thickening of the polyphonic texture that swiftly re-establishes the key of C-minor. The "Thema fugatum" which follows immediately does not constitute a Fugue in its own right, rather it is nothing but the twenty-first and most extensive variation of the Passacaglia. This time Bach uses only the first half of the theme, superimposing a rhythmic countersubject that considerably enlivens the entire development of the composition. The polyphonic discourse becomes increasingly dense, until the building tension peaks in a powerful "Neapolitan sixth" chord, followed by a sudden pause. This culminating moment then leads to the coda and final cadence on a bright C-major chord. Duration: 12.45

The history of paper ranges over more than five thousand years: likely starting around 3500 BC in old Egypt with the use of papyrus. The oldest findings of written paper date from 2700 BC. In China, the first production of paper took place in the year 105 AD. The Arabs acquired their knowledge of the art of making paper around 750 AD, thanks to Chinese prisoners of war. Around the same time, the Celtic Ogham script was created in Ireland and carved into stones or trees. In Europe, the first paper mill was not put into operation until the 12th century! No matter how different the production methods and its historical use, paper was always a way to pass on wisdom, art and knowledge. Even today, in the age of digitalisation, paper still has a somewhat 'sacred' image. With Papyrus, Thomas Doss has written a wonderful composition in which the history of paper is reflected, and listeners can very much hear the various periods of this history represented throughout the piece. With its height of 4,808 meters, Mont-Blanc is called the roof of Europe. The highest mountains on our planet have been insurmountable for a long time. Only in the past 250 years have those giants been mounted. Crystal-hunter Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard, a doctor, were the first to climb Mont-Blanc, in 1786. Many paths lead to Mont-Blanc's peak: the regular ascent goes through the magnificent voie royale of Saint-Gervais-les- Bains, which was opened in August 1855 by the Englishmen Hudson, Kennedy, and Smythe. Today's most common route to climb up, starting from Saint-Gervais via Aiguille du Gouter (3,863m), Dome du Gouter (4,304m), and Arete des Bosses (4,547m), was first used in 1861. Otto M. Schwarz composed this work inspired by the roof of Europe with its luminous and huge glaciers. Early in the morning, mountain-climbers set off to the peak; they witness the sunrise, and experience the hazards that the journey up to the summit brings along. A snowstorm and falling rocks at Arete des Bosses aggravate their journey. A sudden change of weather, however, enables them to reach the top after a strenuous ascent. This piece invites you to an imaginary journey from Saint-Gervais-les-Bains via the voie royale to the top of Mont-Blanc.Duration: 6.45

This article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights forms the basic idea behind this majestic Symphony of Freedom. In each of the three movements, the composer picks another angle on this universal theme of freedom. In the first movement, Cry for Freedom, it's the Dalai Lama of which the composer is a great admirer. The second movement, Dream of Freedom, takes the photograph of the deceased three-year-old refugee boy Ailan Kurdi on the beach at Bodrum as a basis. Suite from the Incidental Music. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809 - 1847) composed the music for William Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream at two different times. In 1826, at the age of 16, he wrote a concert overture (Op. 21). Sixteen years later, in 1842, he composed the incidental music (opus 61) for King Frederick William IV of Prussia, in which he incorporated the existing overture. The overture premiered in Stettin (then in Prussia, now Szczecin, Poland) on February 20, 1827, conducted by Carl Loewe. Mendelssohn had to travel 80 miles through a raging snowstorm to get to the concert, which became his first public appearance. The first British performance of the overture was conducted by Mendelssohn himself on June 24, 1829, at the Argyll Rooms in London. After the concert, Thomas Attwood was given the score of the overture for safekeeping, but left it in a taxi and was never found. Mendelssohn later rewrote the overture entirely from memory.Duration: 14.45
