English Dance Suite (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Gardner, John - Noble, Paul
Original Scoring. Arranged for the modern Concert/Wind Band, scored for three trumpets, reasonable doubling of parts where the original musical effect is not altered so that players can have a more responsible and enjoyable experience, more legible parts with less doubling on one staff, etc. The piece is offered either as a complete suite of seven movements, and also as seven individual movements which may be purchased independently. The English Dance Suite was originally composed by John Gardner for Wind Band, and has been re-set for the modern Concert Band instrumentation. Both the original version, edited and type-set by Paul Noble, and this arrangement are first editions now available for purchase to bands around the world. The set of seven Renaissance dances depict John Gardner's love of Scottish music, the Renaissance heritage, and some of his own mischievous approach to music. The first movement, Chacony on a Golden Theme, reminiscent of the Allegro movement of Purcell's Golden Sonata, is much used as a vehicle for variation on a repeated short harmonic progression, often involving a fairly short repetitive bass-line which offered a compositional outline for variation, decoration, figuration and melodic invention. In this it closely resembles the passacaglia. The Alman originated in the 16th century as a duple metere dance of moderate tempo, already considered very old, with a characteristic double-knocking upbeat of one or occasionally three sixteenth notes. It appears to have derived from a German dance but no identifiable dance and no German dance instructions from this era survive. The Hornpipe, usually in 3/2 dance rhythm, is an Irish, Scottish and English dance. It is done in hard shoes, which are used to help keep track of how the dancer keeps in time. There are two variations of the hornpipe dance: fast and slow. Usually, more experienced dancers will do the slow hornpipe but younger dancers will start out with the fast hornpipe and then switch in later years. The Corranto is a 16th-century court dance characterized by short advances and retreats, in quick triple time. The Volta (Italian: the turn or turning) is an anglicised name from the later Renaissance. Its main figure consisted of a turn and lift in a sort of closed position. The Pavan is a slow processional dance common in Europe during the 16th century. The Reel, indigenous to Scotland, consists largely of quaver (eighth note) movement with an accent on the first and third beats of the bar.

The Irish Washerwoman (from The Irish Suite) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Anderson, Leroy
The Irish Washerwoman, the first movement of Leroy Anderson's Irish Suite, combines folk material with the composer's own whimsicality. The score was commissioned by the Eire Society of Boston and carries a dedication to Arthur Fiedler, who conducted its first performance on June 6, 1947 at Symphony Hall in Boston. The complete suite includes six melodies which range from the nostalgic to the humorous, from the plainly sentimental to the purely exuberant. Although the melodies come from overseas, the brilliant Irish Suite is typical of Anderson's nimble orchestration, ingenious charm, and happy inventiveness. This opening movement is a jig; brisk in tempo and gay in mood. This edition has been freshly re-engraved with a full-score for the first time, permitting articulation uniformity throughout the work.Duration: 3.00

St. Martin's Suite (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan
This suite was composed by Jan Van der Roost on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the 'Koninklijke Sint Martinusfanfare' (Royal Saint Martinus Fanfare Band) from Halle (Belgium). The composer was required to create a suite in three movements based on three images associated with the 'Sint Martinusfanfare' from the small town of Halle in the province of Brabant. The first movement (Andante Pomposo) describes Martin, a soldier in the Roman army. In Andante Moderato we see the image of Martin, who become a Christian and chooses to devote his life to God. In this movement, the composer was inspired by the Brabantine gothic art of the Sint Martinus Basilica in Halle. The contrast between the dark Basilica and the statue of Our Lady between the soaring pillars will vividly come to life for audiences of this descriptive piece. The final movement, Allegro Molto Vivace', could have been an image for a frivolous peasant in the Halle carnival. In a triptych about St. Martin it is more fitting to refer to it as an apotheosis, the crown on the pastoral work of Martin, Bishop of Tours, Patron Saint of the Fanfare Band and the Basilica of Halle.Duration: 13:30

Aladdin Suite (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Nielsen, Carl - De Meij, Johan
The large creative output of the Danish composer Carl Nielsen (1865 - 1931) contains six symphonies, chamber music, vocal works and music for the theatre: two operas (Saul & David and Maskerade) and stage music for sixteen different plays. The stage music for Aladdin was written at the request of Johannes Nielsen, the director of the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen. This production was based on the drama Aladdin (1805) by the Danish author Adam Oehlenschlager. Already before the premiere at the Royal Theatre, Carl Nielsen had adapted some of the music for the concert hall: he conducted the first performance of six of the seven movements of the concert suite on February6th, 1919. Johan de Meij's transcription for symphonic band contains the following movements: I. Oriental Festival March; II. Aladdin's Dream / Dance of the Morning Mist; III. African Negro Dance

Cowboy Suite Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
In the tripartite 'Cowboy Suite' Alan Laken takes us to the Wild West, the domain of cowboys, indians, trappers and other fortune hunters. Around 1890 the west coast of America was reached, which in effect meant the end of the Wild West. Its stories, however, survived and have been a source of inspiration for many books, films, and, of course, music. Some characters, such as Jesse James, Billy the Kid, and Buffalo Bill are forever linked to these tales. In the 'Cowboy Suite' we first hear the 'Hoedown'. At the end of an exhausting workday the labourers used to lay down their tools, among others the 'hoes' and spontaneously began to play music on the instruments which they then possessed (guitars, fiddles, and banjos) and to dance. After being jolted on the 'Wagon Trail' we reach the third part, the 'Cowboy Roundup'. In this last part it becomes clear that as a cattle driver it is imperative to stay firmly seated in the saddle. As the cattle are rounded up, i.e. driven together, spectacular things happen. 04:45
